LA to LA via Mexican Riviera - Questions

Wondering about the following:

1) How do the ports of Ensenada, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas compare to the typical Caribbean ports on available activities, excursions and shopping?

2) How rough are the waters on this route in Sept/Oct?

3) How often are cruises rerouted during this time period because of weather?

Any insight appreciated!

Thanks for your help!

Mex riv cruises are very, very rarely re-routed. The ports are all on mainland, not islands, so weather seldom affects the schedules.

The cruise back north on the last sea day is usually rough due to cruising against the currant. We have had only one Mex riv cruise that was actually calm while heading back north. During hurricane season the Mex Riv is a good choice. All the action is in the Atlantic.

The ports are very different if you are into water sports.(snorkeling, diving) The ocean is a dark color and not as warm or clear. As far as shopping, the ports are very much the same. Deep sea fishing is good as is whale watching.

Sept/early Oct. you are still subject to hurricanes on the Mexican Riviera. They do not have to hit land to alter the cruise itinerary. Granted the hurricanes are not as frequent as in the Caribbean, but they do happen. I was on a Mexican Riviera Cruise in early Oct. We were supposed to go to Cabo, Mazatlan & Puerto Vallarta. Because of a hurricane, we visited Ensenada, Cabo and Mazatlan.

The water is not as clear or as warm as the Caribbean. Weather is usually very warm then, so watersports are refreshing. Snorkeling is much better in the Caribbean.

There are many shore excusions, especially in Mazatlan & Puerto Vallarta, for history, sights, water sports and shopping. I have also found it fun to just walk in town. There are also a lot of popular bars in each of the towns.
