MISSYLOU Posted April 18, 2004 #26 Share Posted April 18, 2004 Patqrq, Thanks for posting. It sounds like Celebrity did what they could to satisfy the passengers. Glad it didn't spoil your cruise. Guess we'll never know the how's or why's of this incident. Mommymade.59 Posted April 18, 2004 #27 Share Posted April 18, 2004 I am another passenger from this cruise. My husband and I and 2 daughters got off the ship at 9:30 am to do a little quick shopping for shampoo and conditioner. (Nothing found within walking distance.) We were having a wedding vow renewal ceremony at noon at the Battery with all the pomp and circumstance. We arrived back on board at 11:15 and passengers were all standing around the gangway. We didn't realize we wouldn't be able to get back off. We thought it was a temporary setback. We were dressed and ready with everyone else who wanted to disembark at 11:45. Our limosine, minister, photographer and videographer were all waiting for us at the Gazebo. At 1:15pm we were quietly escorted down the crew's gangway by the cruise director who had gotten special permission to let us off for the ceremony. We paid for everything in advance. We had the limo from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Fortunately, we were able to contact the photographer by way of cell phone and they were willing to wait for us. The ceremony was rushed but we were very happy to still have it. We were told as we were escorted off that we would not be able to return to the ship until 7pm. We didn't know that they would be providing food for us at the port. We would like to have been reimbursed for our meal and the limosine time we had to pay for and did not get but we were not reimbursed for anything. As it is all over now, we are simply grateful that Susan, the cruise director took a stand for us, so that we could have our ceremony. We will have a story to tell our grandchildren. 1989~Galileo (Chandris)Honeymoon 1990~Meridian (Galileo stretched ) (Chandris sold to Celebrity) 1991~Starward (NCL) 1991~Nordic Prince (RCCL) 1992~Regent Sea (Regency) 1993~Began Family, stopped cruising for several years! 1999~Regal Empress (Regal Cruises) Kids first cruise! 2000~Sovereign of the Seas (RCCL) Kids second cruise! 2001~Sovereign of the Seas (RCCL) Kids third cruise! 2003~ Infinity (Celebrity) Alaska! DaveNetMan Posted April 18, 2004 #28 Share Posted April 18, 2004 I too was on this cruise, although I was not one stuck in port, rather stuck onboard. We had a 12noon tour booked and were 10 people back in line when they stopped letting people off at 10:30. Initially, no explanation was given other than 'Coast Guards orders', and we were assured we'd eventually get off. We sat on the floor of the lobby til noon, then went up for lunch. Still weren't told any reason, until the captains announcement about the 'computer miscommunication' and that we were leaving and returning. Alot of people, myself included, assumed it was a security issue. We even heard a 'rumor' that someone spotted 4 divers in the water (ahhh!). We knew the family stuck onboard while waiting to renew their vows, and felt sympathy for them. Not to mention the poor souls wandering back and seeing their ship sail away, wondering if they even had money on them for food. We also heard talk of a mother who was stuck on ship while her 13-year-old daughter was stuck in port, but no idea if there was any truth to it. As far as compensation, we did of course get a refund on our tour. Later came the apology and the 'open bar tomorrow night' announcement, which brought cheers from many, but as it turned out to be only 2 hours and I'm not much of a drinker, I gained nothing by this. But again, I my discomfort was tiny compared to about 400 other folks! I heard NOTHING about a port reimbursement until I read it hear.
DaveNetMan Posted April 19, 2004 #29 Share Posted April 19, 2004 Just out of curiousity, does anyone know what legal obligations (if any) a cruiseline has to its passangers if it doesn't go to a scheduled port (or in this case, didn't let people off)? I'm guessing there's probably fine print somewhere releasing them of any legal responsability, but was thinking in all fairness passangers should be offered a partial refund of their fare plus port charges. Am I wrong here? Has anyone has experience with this? Of course, neither Celebrity nor the Coast Guard has yet taken the blame on this one. It's in the cruise contract that comes along with the tickets.
