How about novels?

I have the McCullough and Vipond books on order, but I also like to read a little historical fiction. Michner didn't do one on the Panama Canal, so does anyone have any suggestions for fictional novels set in the Panama Canal area?

I am reading Michner's "Caribbean" right now which I wish I had read before we did our Panama cruise this January. He does spend a number of chapters dealing with Cartagena which was the center of Spanish activity in the Carribean and the millions of dollars of silver that came across Panama before going to Spain.

PANAMA by Eric Zencey . . . loosely related to early Canal history. I didn't particularly care for it, but others might like it . . . got lots of favorable reviews and attention when it came out.

THE RISING SUN is a great read about an early Scottish attempt to hand dig a Canal!

Regards, Richard
