flashdog_1 Posted June 24, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 24, 2009 I don't know if this website charges its own fees or what, but the fees are certainly more than the 4.116% HI tax which would be only a couple of bucks. http://www.carrentals.com/rentalrates.jsp?r=1245803415873 I found the answer before my edit button disappeared. Here's what one website said: Rates are subject to the applicable Hawaii General Excise tax, the vehicle Licensing fee, the applicable Airport Concession Recovery Fee and the Hawaii Highway Revenue surcharge, currently per day No wonder you can't count on a $29 rental being $29 even if you do not buy their waivers! Comes up to about $
boulders Posted June 24, 2009 #2 Share Posted June 24, 2009 Sounds about right for a car rental. The taxes in HI for car rentals run about 20-25%. It's not too different than renting cars in other popular locations.
Rare mking8288 Posted June 24, 2009 #3 Share Posted June 24, 2009 My general rule of thumbs are for adding 20-25% on TOP of the advertised/quoted car rental price for a "true" net total cost PLUS gasoline - more & higher for renting in Canada since they have a higher provincial sales tax to begin with (at 30-35%). Keep in mind some of the fees & surcharges are based on a flat daily rate imposed (i.e. $1.50 for FF miles processing, $1 for airport fees) while others are based on a percentage of the daily rental charges. All of the major car rental agencies can compute the details online & give you a fairly accurate estimate of all the charges, fees & taxes that they are obligated to collect & assess based on the rental agreement - it's all "kosher" as they say. Aloha ....
flashdog_1 Posted June 24, 2009 Author #4 Share Posted June 24, 2009 I guess I was naive and thought it'd just be $29 plus tax, not realizing that lots of agencies were adding fees. Thanks for your comments, folks.
