Desdichado62 Posted August 9, 2014 #1826 Share Posted August 9, 2014 Thanks for this very helpful thread. Can you recommend a nice restaurant with authentic Sweedish food that is open on sunday for lunch? Thanks so much! Well I think it depends on your budget and I'm not that familiar with restaurants in Stockholm. Here are some advice. http://whatsupsthlm.se/restaurang/har-hittar-du-stockholms-basta-husmanskost/10523/ You can find more if you search for restaurants in the thread. LuckyLena Posted August 11, 2014 #1828 Share Posted August 11, 2014 Aloha from Hawaii. We will visit Stockholm on the Royal Princess. The ship goes to Nynashamn and we'll take the cruiseline's bus to Stockholm to visit on our own. They drop us off in the city center where our Swedish relatives will meet us. Do you know where exactly the drop off point is? Address? I apologize if this question has already been asked and answered. Thank you for all the information you provide. I am not 100% certain but I think it is at the Royal Theatre aka Royal Swedish Opera which is located at Gustaf Adolfs torg. Just don't confuse it with the Royal Dramatic Theatre aka Dramaten which is located at Nybroplan.

Desdichado62 Posted August 25, 2014 #1833 Share Posted August 25, 2014 Starting in September, there will be a new sightseeing operator in Stockholm. The sightseeing operator calls themselves "Ocean bus" and their sightseeing tours will be made with an amphibious bus both on land and on the water. They will have a guide on-board the bus rather then the pre-recorded audio most other operators use. http://www.alltomstockholm.se/stadsliv/article4110316.aos The tour originates from "Blå Porten" which is next to the Abba museum and within walking distance from the Vasa Museum. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Bl%C3%A5+porten/@59.3249954,18.0995788,16z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x465f82aad0f71b3b:0x20ebe13c03037708

Desdichado62 Posted October 3, 2014 #1837 Share Posted October 3, 2014 (edited) The Vasa museum have been named the 13th best museum and The state Hermitage in SPB was awarded second best museum in the world by Tripadvisors members. http://www.tripadvisor.com/TravelersChoice-Attractions-cMuseums-g1 Also we have a new government in Sweden which was presented today. They have announced that their intention is to have free entrance to State museums. However no more details are available and the last time we had this an exemption was made for the Vasa museum. I assume this is because the high costs of preserving the Vasa ship and the high costs for running the museum in general. Get to Vaxholm by bus or boat. However no schedules are available for spring yet and it won't be for another 4-5 months. Then you have in the post above yours a list of museums with free entrance. I think you should get a travel card and use buses and trams to get around rather then HoHo boats/buses. A 72-hour travel card costs 230 SEK / person (approx $31 USD). It is valid on buses and trams and subways. The travel card is also valid on Djurgårdsfärjan. Edited October 28, 2014 by Desdichado62
jmccurdy Posted October 29, 2014 #1842 Share Posted October 29, 2014 Thanks so much for your rapid reply. I am 74 and Stockholm is a place my husband and I have so wanted to see. I am retired nurse and hubby 78 retired also.but we are in good health. An this our 2nd and last trip to Europe--We did Med last year and saw so much. We have been trying hard to fine a hotel that is in good location for sight seeing for 3 days and staying around $200 per day. I we will be there May 25th till we board ship on 28th and depart 29th so we actually have almost 4 days. I am having hard time finding the right area for hotel stay and they are filling up fast. We do want to store our luggage before check in. Central Hotel---this is my 1st choice what do you think Elite Eden Park Hotel Hotel Riddargatan Residence Perseus Scandic Klara sounded good till found bedbugs in reviews Once I get a hotel then I have few more questions---Thank you thank you! We don't need AC in May do we? We live in Phoenix Arizona and some what used to heat. JoAnn jmccurdy12cox.net
Desdichado62 Posted October 29, 2014 #1843 Share Posted October 29, 2014 (edited) I have no personal experience from either of those hotels but reviews look good for Central Hotel so I say go for it if it is your first choice. It is not that far to walk to main areas of interest, except Vasa/Djurgården but they are easily reached by bus/tram. I also agree that no AC will be needed. Also, will the palace be crowded, are we better off going there early or late in the day? BTW, we are on the same ship as jmmcurdy and will be doing several tours together, though not in Stockholm. Thanks, this is a wonderful thread:) We who live in Stockholm tend to consider the Ice Bar as just a tourist trap. It has nothing to do with Stockholm and in my mind it has just been placed inside an hotel so that tour buses have a place to drop there passengers for a while. The real ice bar is in the famous Icehotel in Jukkasjarvi in northern Sweden. This hotel, built each winter with ice and snow has all the atmosphere and surroundings that are impossible to copy inside a hotel in the city. http://www.icehotel.com/about-icehotel/ The time of day when it is most crowded around the palace is in the middle of the day. Changing of the guards takes place at 12.15 on weekdays, 13.15 on Sundays, and I guess many take the opportunity to also visit the palace when they are there. In my mind the best thing to visit inside the palace is the Royal Armoury. Edited October 30, 2014 by north-bound

There is the cathedral and also Gamla Uppsala, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uppsala_Cathedral http://www.raa.se/upplev-kulturarvet/gamla-uppsala-museum/ http://www.tripadvisor.se/Attraction_Review-g189871-d247263-Reviews-Gamla_Uppsala-Uppsala_Uppsala_County.html http://www.tripadvisor.se/Attractions-g189871-Activities-Uppsala_Uppsala_County.html "What type clothes do we need --how jeans and sweatshirts?" Jeans and sweatshirts will do just fine, probably bring a semi-warm jacket as well. Personally I found the HoHo bus tours to be very poor quality in relation to the cost. As for day trips, Drottningholm perhaps? http://www.stromma.se/en/Stockholm/The-Archipelago/Day-trips/Drottningholm-Palace/ http://www.stromma.se/en/Stockholm/The-Archipelago/Day-trips/ Blidösundsbolaget also have daytrips: http://www.blidosundsbolaget.se/dagsutflykter/ If you prefer land-based trips, Mariefred is not far away and reached by going with train/vintage train or train/bus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariefred Things to see in Mariefred is the town itself as well as: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g189866-d736162-Reviews-Gripsholm_Castle-Sodermanland_County_Swedish_Lakeland.html http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1187898-d2190245-Reviews-Ostra_Sodermanlands_Jarnvag-Mariefred_Sodermanland_County_Swedish_Lakeland.html I would do Vasa+Djurgården together and then Gamla Stan+Royal Palace+City Hall together due to their proximate location. Vasa is located at Djurgården so it would be natural to Djurgården at the same time so you don't have to spend so much time going to and from each thing.
