Looks like there aren't a lot of experts on this one, so I'll share what little I know. I spent a week in Heraklion last year and stayed near the port. I don't remember any shops in the port compound, but some of the web sites suggest otherwise. In any event, below is a map of the port area; at the foot of "Koules" pier is the main drag of Heraklion. If you walk up that promenade you'll find many shops -- they improve the farther you walk -- probably about 1 K to the main part of town. This isn't luxury shopping, but worth a look. Try the Pantheon Restaurant for lunch -- on an alley in the old part of town, it's been in business for years and has authentic/ well-prepared food IMO.

One last thought: the main attraction of the Heraklion "ruins" scene is Knosses (sp?). Lots of tours offered to this nearby antiquity -- entirely forgettable in my judgement -- very tough to tell what's authentic and what's been recreated over the years.

Of course, the same can be said for most other ruins, including Ephesus, Mycenae, Troy, and even the Roman forum.
