mtsnd1900 Posted November 1, 2012 #1 Share Posted November 1, 2012 Well, the storm has passed and left a wake of destruction throughout many areas of the Ocean State, and Newport was not speared. Be advised, there was some flooding that affected the shopping area, but they are working to restore it quickly. Being right on the water, it is a way of life (floods). On another note, those looking to do the famed Cliff Walk may want to make arrangements to do other things - Much of it has been closed due to damage. Already dangerous in some areas, the surf took a toll on it during the storm. No estimation on when the complete path will be reestablished. Some areas are still open though. http://www2.turnto10.com/news/2012/nov/01/newports-cliff-walk-closed-storm-damage-ar-1225073/ NEWPORT, R.I. -- A large portion of Newport's famed Cliff Walk has been closed because of extensive damage from Sandy. City Manager Jane Howington tells The Associated Press that about half of the 3.5-mile walk was closed after part of the path and a retaining wall washed away and fencing was knocked down. She has no damage estimate yet but says it will take significant work before the path can be made safe. The walk along Newport's eastern shore is one of the city's top attractions. Howington says the historic mansions open for public tours had some trees down and a few windows blown out but otherwise fared well. She says the rotunda and bathing houses at Easton's Beach were "pretty well destroyed.""

mtsnd1900 Posted April 15, 2013 Author #6 Share Posted April 15, 2013 The Cliff Walk has sections that will be closed for much of this summer season - http://www.cliffwalk.com/ - the damage was extensive and there is an ongoing debate about how the repairs should be carried out. The current battle is with the surfers who are worried that the repair platforms will interfere with the wave patterns. There are still countless other great things (many other free) to do in this wonderful city. http://www.destinationnewport.com/events/ http://www.gonewport.com/events-calendar http://www.fortadams.org/Calenders/2012%20calendar.htm (the Fort itself is wonderful, too).
