Rough Point, Newport RI

Will be on the Caribbean Princess this fall and have pre-booked the Rough Point Tour from 845-1045am. Wondering if the tour guide will allow us to stay behind so we can see some of the other mansions instead of returning to the pier with the tour? Since we have a few hours we thought we might also tour the Breakers independently, then catch the #67 trolley back to the pier area. Had hoped to walk the Cliff Walk, but see that it is closed from Ledge to Ruggles due to hurricane damage. Anyone with any experience with doing this?

Decent stretches of the Cliff Walk are open, others are closed but passable, if you're a bit of a risk taker. We did about 2/3 of it (most of the north end of it) 3 weekends ago, but it required strong concentration on some parts.

Thanks for that info. Guess we will take a wait and see attitude regarding the Cliff Walk. We are not too easily intimidated, so good to know it is at least passable. If the weather is good we can give it a go, if not then we will go back to the pier area and have lunch. We have all been to Newport before, so we can plan to be flexible.

Progress was made this week on the repair efforts for the walk - no, nothing has been done, but some of the politics have been ironed out... Will probably be in repair state this cruise season, returning late in the year at best, or even next year to full status.

  • 3 months later...

they have been working very hard on the parts behind the breakers and beyond..just there this past weekend and they are in the process of pouring concrete -- so there should be some good spots to walk thru by the time you arrive--doubt if the cruise operator will let u stay behind and get back to the port your self..may have to go back via bus or taxi...

You can walk from Rough Point NORTH to Ochre Court or "40 Steps", or Memorial Blvd. Taxi Cabs are abundant to the Visitor's Center, or you can hop on board the RIPTA (public Bus) back to America's Cup Blvd. If you start this tour early, you will have enough time to walk back to the tender area if yo so desire.

Cliff Walk is still closed from Rough Pt north to the Breakers. Work is on-going on repairing the section in front of the Breakers, should be done or we were told via the local newspaper in a few weeks. Section from Rough Pt to Ruggles (just south of the Breakers) will take much longer.

After touring Rough Pt take the tour bus back to the tender boarding area and then a taxi back to the Breakers. Depending on how long your ship is in port may or may not have sufficient time for both mansions. Give your self about 2 1/2 hours to get to, then do the Breakers tour and then get back to the tender area.

Why not cancel the excursion and take the #67 bus as far as it goes depending if the summer bus schedule is still in effect to get to Rough Point. If it isn't, you'll have to walk about .6 mile.

Once done at RP, walk (distance about 1.3 miles), or bus to the Breakers.

From the Breakers, you could walk on the open portion of Cliff Walk; and then take the bus back to the visitor's center.

BTW, I do like the idea of using the excursion to get to RP, and then going it alone from there. I would inform the tour guide of your intentions after the tour of RP is completed, and just walk away. I don't know if there would be any repercussions.
