ripleysmom Posted September 22, 2004 #1 Share Posted September 22, 2004 Is there a relatively easy way to get to Whittier from Vancouver other than renting a car? If we were to rent a car about how long would it take to get from Vancouver to Whittier?
Yukon Posted September 22, 2004 #2 Share Posted September 22, 2004 It's almost 2,000 miles from Vancouver to Whittier, so I assume you mean from Anchorage to Whittier. The easiest way is probably the Alaska Railroad - renting a car it's about an hour and a half drive. Murray
ripleysmom Posted September 22, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted September 22, 2004 No I meant Vancouver actually. I didn't want to have to fly into one locale and fly out of another since that would be more money. Looks like that is what I would have to do if I decided to do a Southbound cruise on Carnival. jrask Posted September 22, 2004 #4 Share Posted September 22, 2004 If you want to fly roundtrip, your are going to need to book a round-trip cruise. If you want to spend time after your cruise exploring the interior of Alaska, you want the 1-way cruise and should look into using a multi-city function for tickets rather than just two 1-way tickets. Its a very good time to bring out those frequent flyer miles!
Budget Queen Posted September 22, 2004 #5 Share Posted September 22, 2004 Or do back to back cruising. :)
Yukon Posted September 22, 2004 #6 Share Posted September 22, 2004 Vancouver to Whittier is about 46 hours of actual behind-the-wheel driving time, so figure on at least 5 days, 7 days so you don't arrive burned out, 10 days so you can see something on the way (it's a wonderful trip!). I can't even imagine what a one-way rental would cost, though - if it can even be done cross-border). Murray
jrask Posted September 22, 2004 #7 Share Posted September 22, 2004 Murray, You got a mile-by-mile guide on that one!
Yukon Posted September 22, 2004 #8 Share Posted September 22, 2004 Murray,You got a mile-by-mile guide on that one! Only for about 1,500 miles of it, and it's not as detailed as the Skagway-Carcross one - http://www.explorenorth.com/library/weekly/aa111398.htm (thought you had me, didn't ya?) :) Murray
jrask Posted September 23, 2004 #9 Share Posted September 23, 2004 You're better than Mapquest! I'm impressed.
ripleysmom Posted September 23, 2004 Author #10 Share Posted September 23, 2004 We already have the round trip booked but I was thinking about switching to the Carnival Spirit.
lmcd Posted September 23, 2004 #11 Share Posted September 23, 2004 Have you priced the flights as open-jaw flights? Since you want to fly into Anchorage and depart from Vancouver, an open-jaw flight would give the best prices. Not much more than a Vancouver roundtrip. At least that is case for me from Nashville. Paid $473 in Aug, 2003. i'm sure it would be more now though. Larry
garycarla Posted November 7, 2004 #12 Share Posted November 7, 2004 If the open jaw is too expensive, you can get one way Anchorage/Seattle flights from Alaska Air for just over $200 each. At least for the dates I checked for June 2005
Copperhead626 Posted November 21, 2004 #13 Share Posted November 21, 2004 Try Air Canada (http://www.aircanada.ca) flights from Vancouver to Anchorage. We are flying the end of June and got a one way flight for under $200Cdn.
