hsb5956 Posted January 18, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 18, 2012 Thinking about a Trans Atlantic Crossing on Windstar 2012 or 2013. Was thinking of 2012 Colon - Bermuda & Bermuda - Lisbon together but the ship and itinerary are not offered being they plan on upgrading Windstar the ship 2010 was going to do Lisbon - Barbados but decided to hold off with Windstar's restructuring. @010 I heard the TA's had very few passengers. How many passenger's were on the TA's 2011? No dough with the new renovation's and new itineraries and hotel & cruise programs and on board amenity program's things are looking really good for Windstar all sounds exciting..... Looking forward to cruising on Windstar
Delta Queen Posted January 18, 2012 #2 Share Posted January 18, 2012 Hi: We did the Apr 2011 crossing & there were 94 (we think) people on board. The Nov 2010 crossing had 81 passengers. Both of them were great. The crew put on special dinners for us & of course, the service was excellent. We are booked on the Mar crossing from St Martin - I have started a roll call but no-one else has joined. We prefer the Nov crossings but what can you do when there isn't one :D Deltaqueen
hsb5956 Posted January 18, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted January 18, 2012 The Wind Surf is a bigger ship then the other 2 almost double passenger capacity must of been nice having lot's of space not being even half full. Did they have all the dinning option's open every evening? As I understand it a goodly ( if goodly is a word ? ) amount of Windstar TA cruiser's are repeat TA cruiser's who take the voyage every year? Understanding that Windstar tends to be mostly couples mid 60's on up for TA crossings how welcoming is the group on board to a 56 year solo cruiser? Understanding it is a low key cruise sort of the biggest social time is cocktails before dinner and the couple party / special dinner nights. Are people really parochial ore more to them selves being so many are couples? Being a solo traveler thinking about dinning with others? I was on a Starclipper TA was a very social group on board. Smooth sailing, HSB5956

Did they have all the dinning option's open every evening? On the Nov 2010 crossing LeMarche (?) wasn't open but all the other restaurants were & on the Apr 2011 crossing they were all open & because of the small number of passengers reservations weren't necessary most nights. As I understand it a goodly ( if goodly is a word ? ) amount of Windstar TA cruiser's are repeat TA cruiser's who take the voyage every year? Yes, most of us are repeaters who just like TAs. Some only like the April crossing & some only like the Nov crossing Understanding that Windstar tends to be mostly couples mid 60's on up for TA crossings how welcoming is the group on board to a 56 year solo cruiser? Understanding it is a low key cruise sort of the biggest social time is cocktails before dinner and the couple party / special dinner nights. Are people really parochial ore more to them selves being so many are couples? There have been several solo passengers & I don't think age really matters. We don't do the cocktails before dinner thing often, but that's where it seems to be more social. We preferred going up to the Compass Rose after dinner to listen to Callen & Joyce since they played our kind of music. There are various groups - who like to get together to do needlepoint or play cards. It is definitely not a ship for swingers.:) Being a solo traveler thinking about dinning with others? At the entrance to the dining room you can ask the maitre d' if there are any tables to share. I was on a Starclipper TA was a very social group on board. With so few passengers it was almost as if we were on our own private yacht. We have also been on a TA when it was almost full & there was still plenty of space to be private if that's what you want. hsb5956 Posted January 18, 2012 Author #5 Share Posted January 18, 2012 Noticed studying the Windstar's calendar of TA crossings in both direction's fall 2012 crossing is on Windstar the ship and 2013 April crossing listed as of now is the funky longer option Colon - Bermuda & Bermuda - Lisbon on Windstar the ship. Looks like Windstar has decided to use the small ship size for TA's. What is your thought's perception's of doing the TA on the small Windstar ship? You past Windstar experience's on Ta's have been on the larger Wind Surf? Do you think the same loyal Wind Surf TA 'ers would opt for the small Windstar ship based on your experience and knowing others on board? Based on your past on board TA cruiser number's the smaller ship's would be about half full. the larger ship would be about a quarter full. Saw a online video of Callen & Joyce they sing good stuff also saw online the other group ? Rain also very good. Smooth sailing, HSB5956

Looks like Windstar has decided to use the small ship size for TA's. What is your thought's perception's of doing the TA on the small Windstar ship? Where did you find the info on 2013? I looked on Windstar's site but couldn't find out anything about 2013 TAs. I don't think I'd be as happy on the smaller ship but since we don't like any other cruise line but do like TAs we might just have to put up with it. Your past Windstar experience's on Ta's have been on the larger Wind Surf? Yes, in fact Winsdsurf from Fort Lauderdale to Lisbon was our first ever cruise & other ships have not been quite as enjoyable. Do you think the same loyal Wind Surf TA 'ers would opt for the small Windstar ship based on your experience and knowing others on board? Have no idea. Based on your past on board TA cruiser number's the smaller ship's would be about half full. the larger ship would be about a quarter full. Again. no idea Saw a online video of Callen & Joyce they sing good stuff also saw online the other group ? Rain also very good. Yes, both pairs are good but we connected more with Joyce & Callen Delta Queen
6rugrats Posted January 19, 2012 #7 Share Posted January 19, 2012 There is no 2013 TA listed for the Windstar. I also wonder where you are seeing this. I don't understand your question anyway. ALL Windstar's ships have to do a TA to get from the Caribbean in the spring to Europe for the summer cruises. The only time no passengers would be on board is if they were doing a refurb on the ship.
hsb5956 Posted January 20, 2012 Author #8 Share Posted January 20, 2012 Okay here is how to view it on go to the Home Page for Winstar http://www.windstarcruises.com Then you will see below the big flashing picture promotional banner a wood colored dark brownish box titled: Search Voyages Under it left side Destinations - be sure the drop down menu says: All Destinations next to Destinations to the right Year be sure the drop down menu says: 2013 ( only way the search shows this is by doing this way ) I heard that by mid February at the latest all 2013 cruises will be up on the Windstar's site. It might even be up sooner my memory is not recalling foreshore. Lisbon air pricing has skyrocked over the last 2 years. If you do beside to take the smaller Windstar ship we probably will see you on board depending if I do the 2012 October - November sailing or wait till March - April 2013. 2013 TA scheduale as of now March 30 Colon - Hamilton Wind Star 8 $1299.00 $1499.00 $2299.00 >View Cruise April 7 Hamilton - Lisbon Wind Star 13 $1599.00 $1799.00 $2499.00 Smooth Sailing HSB5956
hsb5956 Posted January 20, 2012 Author #9 Share Posted January 20, 2012 Some ship's will do maintenance stop en-route on a TA for dry dock or will just do a crew only no passenger's to Europe another possibility is they do full ship charters so they may do special itinerary then take the ship back into the normal scheduale / route. From a cost side of things it may make sense if Wind Surf being it does not fill up being it is biggest capacity passenger ship to run it back with out passenger's thus maybe fill one of the smaller ships with more passengers and make that voyage more profitable. Look at at from the corporate side of profit and loss not the passenger side they being corporate need to use resources the most cost effective way possible. Having been a manger before accountable for operations and profit and loss I under using resources the best / most economical way espechialy in today's economical climate. Today the philosophy is in many corporate world's is lean / cost effective savings while being pro the customer TQM. Through out the cruise and travel industry we are seeing this.
