First time in Cannes (Monte Carlo). Recommendations of what to see. Will be in port 9 am to 6 pm. Should we take a RCCL tour or can we enjoy by just walking around? Please name some sights to see or recommend a tour. Thanks.

You can find a lot of info by simply using the CC search but we will give you a quick answer. Cannes is a nice city (we have stayed there quite a few nights and been there on multiple cruises) but it is not really a place you can define by "sights." There is no Eiffel Tower or Statue of Liberty in Cannes. It is just city on the coast, with a beach, some famous hotels (like the Carlton) and is best known for its annual Film Festival. If you decide to stay in Cannes (there are many places you can go in the region) it is possible to walk to all the areas sought out by most tourists. You will see a beach, the sea, a convention center, stores and shops (ranging from normal to high end), etc. If you are interested in leaving the environs of Cannes then there are many options including places like St Paul de Vence, Antibes, Nice, Grasse, etc.

My itinerary says Cannes (Monte Carlo), France, tendered.

I have no clue as to why a cruise line would do that, but it is truly misleading. Most likely you will tender into the old harbor at Cannes which is about an hour away from Monte Carlo by train, bus or car. Between Cannes and Monte Carlo you have such places as Antibes, Nice, Eze, etc. And even St Paul de Vence is closer then Monte Carlo! There are actually 2 ports closer to Monte Carlo, one being Monte Carlo (where they have a cruise ship pier) and Villefranche (which is a tender port).

Well wherever you start from, if it's any help/interest this is what I did in that area last October. If I go back there I will try and see the places Hank mentions. All the best, Tony

We just returned from our cruise and we tendered at Villefrance. We used Riviera Premium Tours, (group of 8 van) they did a great job for about 360 euros for all 8. They picked us up at the port, we went to Ez Village which was really nice. We had lunch, then we went to Monte-Carlo, which was okay for a one and only time visit, and then we drove to Nice to the flower market. Nice and the French Riviera are beautiful, I will definitely spend more time in Nice when I go back next October.

I confirm with RCC, our ship arrive the cannes , I have heard Nice is good place to visit, is it hard to DIW. Any suggestion beside the Nice worth a visit? I have never been in Europe and it is my first big trip. Thank you

Any of the places along the area are worth a visit. Nice is a larger city then say Villefrance.Monte Carlo/Monaco offer something else different as well.Antibes has some great seafood restos. Since this is your first trip read up on yiour ports on the boards for each as to what to do and see,but most of all do some reading as in Rick Steves' books or others so you get a feel for the area's.

I thought Cannes was a little too high end for me. I've seen high end shops and beautiful streets before. Though, they have some nice beaches in Cannes - just not nice enough for me to spend my 8 hours there. Consider booking a private round trip transfer to Monaco and Monte Carlo. There are many companies who provide this. It will take about an hour to get there but you should see the palace and old town of Monaco. Also, there is a parade every day around noon where the palace guards are rotated. Was great to watch.

An easy peasy day for someone who has never been to Europe is to take the train to Nice. It's pretty easy - although old town Nice is a bit of a hike from the train station. If you search the board someone last year posted how to take the tram the rest of the way to Old town. On way back, if you have time you could check out Antibes. Or, check out Cannes a bit after Nice. There is a charming area up the hill (it would be to the left as you leave the tender dock). Or if you want to spend more time in Cannes, then perhaps just a trip to Antibes. It has a nice morning market and a pleasant Picasso museum (love Antibes - it's just a real, unpretentious Riviera town.)

From Cannes - I'd give Monaco a miss.

By far Nice has the most to see in the area and is representative of area overall. Just depends on how much you are up for on that day on a busy western Med itinerary.

YMMV
