$2 coins soon add up!!

Just thought I would share...

My husband and I have been collecting $2 coins since Feb this year and putting them in a 600ml coke bottle. Well we counted it last night as it was so full we could not fit another coin in. :) What we were really suprised at was the amount it held. We ended up with $980.00 :eek: So that is a great bonus and will go toward our spending money for our cruise. :D

Have to agree with you. We always do this & poor hubby has to hand over the coins, he thinks I'm mad but agrees it's a good way to save.

I buy those cheap tins from the reject shop & give one to each of my friends (we cruise together yearly if we can). We then have an "opening of the tins" night just before we cruise & that's our spending money. It's such a painless way to save.

I am another one who is doing this.

I also manage to collect the money from hubby's pants most nights. I give him back the notes!!!

The dollar and two dollars go in our tin and the small coins go into another container. I use this at times but when i get a fair bit I give it to daughter to count up and she gets half.

Why don't banks count the money boxed anymore..at least st. george don't you have to count and bag it.

I hope we get a fair bit by January.

My last job was at a bank, and if customers came in with coin to count we had to charge them by the minute :eek:!!!!

This was one of the many reasons why I really didn't like working there.... and left!!!!:D

Yes we have the money boxes also. I also try to nab the coins from DH pants when I can - it's a great strategy! We plan to keep up our money boxes to save for cruise number 2!

This is a fantastic idea and exactly what i am doing for our cruise next year.

My parents and I are saving all our 5c pieces for the cruise for the kids spending money. We have over $62 for them to spend already and its still 12 months away!!!

You would probably find that your local club maybe prepared to take your coin for you as long as it is separated. We do this for our customers where I work and we don't need to order so much change from the bank then:)

Commonwealth bank has a self serve coin count machine. I opened an account there (affectionally called the STASH CASH account) and all my coin for the cruise goes in there. If you are an account holder then they don't charge you but otherwise its 10% of the deposit.

Hi Ellen,

We do similiar we have 2 money boxes 1 for silver and the other for gold coins which we deposit something every day.Your rite about it adding up quickly.The other thing we do is take our lunch to work 4 days a week....you would be suprised how much this saves.By doing this we can purchase a last minute cruise if it comes on special.If we have a substannial surplus we purchase USD when the aussie dollar is up .that way if a special comes up on Rhapsody or Diamond princess we have cash spending money in Us currency to use onboard ...so we dont get caught with the exchange rate.

Keep it up theres always a cruise going

What a great idea! I can't believe how much money you saved in one little bottle....well done :D.

I have a holiday account and bank a certain amount each week. The monthly interest I receive pays for an extra cocktail or two ;) (i'm not disciplined enhough to have it in a money box...I know i would raid it :p).

I will be doing this all the time now as it is suprising how much the bottle held. Mind you, we did have to shake it down a few times. Mick wanted to fit in as much as he could. :D He didn't have any trouble changing it at the bank as he just rang me. :o Hey guys, your right, I have now decided to keep doing this for a cruise next year as well. Start now it will be great!!!

I'm saving 50c's in a $100 tin I got from a $2 shop (cost $1.50). They're great since you cannot raid them - you have to open with a can opener!

I recently got my kids piggy bank contents cashed - we're with suncorp & if you count them into the bags provided (I think they weigh them to verify the correct amount is there), you dont get charged to deposit them into your account.

I TRY to save all my coin's up for cruises. Much easier to do if the cruise isn't that far away. You can save a lot. Kay

Wow I am so impressed. You have totally inspired me!

My DH has been doing this for years. He puts all his change (except for $2 coins) in a small tin and calls it his 'Slush Fund'. :p

When it's full, he looks just like Scrooge hunched over the table counting and bagging it before he takes it to the bank. :D:D:D It IS surprising how quickly it adds up to around $100.

I love saving this way. I have a 50c tin set aside for my cruise. My son gets the knife out and slides it through the top to see how full it is and measures it every week to see when we can crack it.

Another thing I do is use an empty berocca tube. It holds 47 $1 coins, which then go into a tin (or the pokies, hehe). It is a great holding place for when you get change in the supermarket etc. You pop it in the tube straight away and it isn't in your wallet to spend.

I also have another tube for $2 coins, but that gets raided quite frequently for milk and school lunches and the like.

Every now and again if it is at the end of the fortnight and I have a $5 note left over I also fold it really small and put it into the tin. Apart from saving extra, if you desperate and what to use a knife to slide the money out, the $5 note gets in the way and stops you raiding your tin. :D

Was thinking as well how much you could save if you deposit all your $5 notes in a tin.

Maybe this way you'll save more money as when you're out at the shops, you may think twice about breaking that $10 note, whereas it is much easier to break and spend a whole $5!

As there isn't long to go until my cruise at the end of the year, I think I'm going to start collecting all my $5 notes. Will remember to come and post in December how much I've saved!

But I do agree that the tins in a coin is a fantastic idea to get rid of all those coins, and will give you sense of reward each time you pop a coin in! :)

I have once again starting filling up my berocca tube for things like using the washer and dryer on the ship. It's easy to pack and I don't have to scrounge for coins when the time comes.

If I have any left at the end of the cruise.....look out casino, here I come,:rolleyes: and I can chuck the tube out.

We too have the tin from the $2 shop, we started saving from when we booked and now have filled one tin and are over half way on the other. We've convinced the kids to put all their spare coins from their pocket money in the tins (for icecreams) and to their credit they are really enjoying it - trying to lift the tins and weighing them on the bathroom scales. We've decided that the week before the cruise we will make an event of it and have a night where we count the money. Every now and then i'll slip in a note of some denomination just as an added surprise for when we open it.

A quick question though, what coins do the washing machines take on the Sun? I better make sure I have some on hand. Will have to get a Berocca tube as well. :D

What is a Berocca tube?

berocca is just a brand name for a "pick me up kind of vitamin". They come in a tube which is shaped just right for our $1 and $2 coins
