Alta Petroglyphs can you visit independently from port?

Sailing on Marco Polo next week and want to see the petroglyphs at Alta. Does anyone know how easy it is to go independently rather than by ships excursion?

Alta is in the far north of Norway. Depending on the weather, and if it's snowing, it might be easier to take the ship's tour. I would not do this alone, but if you want to do it independently, try and find a reputable tour guide to do this tour.
