The Baths on Virgin Gorda are the most unique experience on a stop at Tortola, you won't see anything like that elsewhere in the Caribbean and that would be "something really cool for the 9 year old to do".

If just going to a beach for the day CGB has several beach restaurants and so is the primary destination of taxis full of your fellow passengers. We enjoy CGB on non-cruise ship days and in the evenings, but we'd avoid that when on a cruise and enjoy another beach like Brewers Bay or Long Bay (Tortola). BB has 1 beach bar (Nicole's) serving great burgers and drinks and renting chairs, beautiful little bay. LB has a resort with a restaurant and they rent chairs to day visitors, the kids would enjoy watching the pelicans diving there and it's a great beach to walk.

So really depends on the level of activity you want but the Baths would certainly be our first recommendation!

Thanks, all! I think that Virgin Gordo sounds great for us, and the kids are excited. It looks like there are 2 excursions listed -- one where they drop you in the water and you have to swim 50-100 yards, and the other where they drop you on land and you have to walk down a path. The one where they drop you in the water says 5 and up, so I guess they won't allow our little ones (of course she couldn't swim 50-100 yards herself, but could if holding my hand wearing a swim vest). Has anyone done the tour where you walk down the path? Are there any major down-sides to coming at the Baths from that direction?

Also, separate question, but how is the snorkeling at VG/Baths?

The swim in can be difficult due to undertow and high waves. The other option is the ferry to the marina at Spanishtown where you board a taxi for a short ride to the Top of the Baths. The walk down the natural path is not difficult, some uneven terrain but not an issue unless there are mobility or handicap issues.

It's a great excursion overall and the kids will love it. We haven't snorkeled there but have been told the snorkeling there can be good, especially out away from the rocks.

The snorkelling is average -- there are better spots in the BVI. However, the Caves are an interesting maze to explore, and there is a decent beach there as well.

Yes there are much better snorkel spots in the BVI but the OP was asking about the Baths in particular. Actually Spring Bay offers good snorkeling is is walkable from the Top of the Baths.

I've never been to Spring Bay so will try to get there and give it a try in December when we next visit BVI.

Spring Bay is an easy 10 minute walk from the Top of the Baths and is a nice beach with good snorkeling. Even if just visiting VG for the day you can find some great info in reviews on tripadvisor from folks taking land vacations there (at the Guavaberry Villas for example) that can help you plan your day better.

Good suggestion. We are staying on the island for a week this time, so we will have lots of time to explore.
