We were there in '12...no problems. Rich in Spanish history. Would go again, no worries.

I have visited there several times and would have no concerns.

Like any city just be aware of your surroundings and leave the expensive items on the ship.

My wife and I stayed in the walled city for 4 nights about a month ago--and felt safe everywhere we went. In most cities the port area is an area of caution.

There are rough areas between the port and the fort and walled city. We were a little crazy and walked from the fort to the walled city a few years ago. We made it safely by walking very purposefully but would not do that again. Do not miss visiting the walled city out of fear as it is well worth seeing.

The port area near the entrance is well worth a little time as well. There is a very small zoo with a few animals and lots of birds as well as a gift shop. The internet there was cheap but very slow when we were there in April with 2 ships in port.
