Diva Onboard Posted May 4, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 4, 2004 We will be in Juneau and were considering a "wildlife quest" which will be primarily a whale watch excursion. Do you think this would be a worthwhile excursion - or should we do something else. Some members of our group believe we will see whales during the course of our cruise and that we should not take the extra time to just do a whale watch. If whales will be plentiful in July, then perhaps our time would better be spent over the Juneau icefield. Will we see whales while cruising through the inside passage in July - or should we take the time to do an actual wildlife quest? dustyroad Posted May 4, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 4, 2004 a whale watching tour is a must if you want to see any. it is very unusual to see one from the ship ( that is the general post by other cruisers ). capt.larry is the best. he only lets 23 passengers on his boat instead of about 100 that are on the ship tour. it was the most awesome, memerable trip i took. we had 5 humpbacks in site at the same time. i will do this tour again when i go back in may next year. he books early so make sure you get in touch with him now if you want to go. www.alaskawhalewatching.com good luck and have fun. and the misty jford floatplane is a must also. i went with michelle from island wings. she is a great pilot and give a really good tour. Budget Queen Posted May 4, 2004 #3 Share Posted May 4, 2004 Your cruise brochures are GREATLY enhanced (with close up breaching whales). If you want sightings that are close you need a tour. From the ship- it requires a great deal of time invested at the front of the ship with a good pair of wide angle binoculars- dressed in layers. Very very few people are willing to do this- I am out alone on deck most of the time. The sightings doing this- will be for maybe a minute- they are underwater. The ship keeps on sailing by. Normal sights are blows, backs, and occasional tail. Anything else is a bonus. Humpbacks are the most often seen. For orcas- be sure to be out on deck last sailing day back to Vancouver- best is to again take a whale watch - Victoria BC or Friday Harbor Wa. Likely sightings out of Juneau are humpbacks.
Travalot Posted May 4, 2004 #4 Share Posted May 4, 2004 Budget Queen - on northbound sailings out of Vancouver, is there a chance to see Orcas? Our ship leaves around 5 pm - during what time frame over the next 24+ hours would there be an opportunity? Thank you! Budget Queen Posted May 5, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 5, 2004 No, not likely as you are sailing the prime areas at night. BUT be up at dawn and get out at the front deck with a pair of binoculars. I saw a pod of about 4-5 last trip, BUT I was the ONLY one out. Had maybe a 2 minute view. Travalot Posted May 5, 2004 #6 Share Posted May 5, 2004 I was afraid that was going to be the case. I love early mornings on the ship, however, so I'll give it a shot! Thanks!
