Hi

Is cruising the Caribbean in October too much of a risk for bad weather?

There is a cruise on the Koningsdam on 18th October for 11 nights, but dont have any experience of cruising during this month.

Any comments or experiences welcome.

Many thanks

Sue

You do take your chances, but we have done several during hurricane season. Generally ships can alter itinerary to avoid them but you might miss one or two of your ports in that case. We were on Western Caribbean cruise once and got followed back by a hurricane. High seas which we actually enjoyed. But many people did not, I must say. So, you can take the risk or not. All depends on your comfort zone. These cruises generally carry a lower price tag which I am sure takes into account the risk of a hurricane. But the water will be much warmer than later in the season and we like that because like to swim and snorkel. So, for us actually prefer hurricane season sailings.

We will be celebrating our 60th Anniversary on the Konningsdam sailing Oct 18th. We have sailed many times in October and only only once have experienced a Hurricane. We ran head on into Hurricane Tomas in 2010. The Captain (Grand Princess) sailed 120 miles South of his intended course and came in behind Tomas. We never felt a thing. These Captains will never take you into a Hurricane. I am not saying every Oct cruise had perfect weather but never a problem. Hope this answers your concerns.

We typically cruise the Caribbean in October/November kids are in school and the prices are cheaper. Luckily only once have had to sail around a hurricane. Rough seas and they closed down the outside decks. By morning still made it to port of call.

Who knows what the Atlantic will bring already had tropical storm Arlene last week.
