Pardner Posted June 1, 2015 #1 Share Posted June 1, 2015 We are booked on the mid August St. Paul-St Louis cruise. We have sailed on numerous ocean cruises but this our first River cruise and any info would be appreciated. Has anyone taken this cruise and how did it compare with other cruises along the American rivers? Also noted the cruise does not end in St Louis as advertised but at Altoon, IL. Is transportation provided between Altoon and St. Louis? What are the venues and cabins like. We are booked in A class near the aft portion. hondorner Posted June 1, 2015 #2 Share Posted June 1, 2015 Have not yet done St. Paul to St. Louis, but can shed a little light on nding at Alton, IL. We're booked on the St. Louis to St. Louis "Mark Twain" cruise in late August. The cruise will actually begin and end in Alton. There is a temporary problem with the normal landing place in St. Louis, and AQ is using Alton as the port for St. Louis. We will have our included hotel stay in St. Louis and then be transported to Alton to board the boat (probably by AQ's "steam coaches", buses wrapped to look like they are the steamboat). They will also transport us back to St. Louis, probably to the city center at or near the hotel. I'm not certain where they will take you, but since the cruise is advertised as St. Louis, I'm certain they will get you there. From there, it will likely be up to you to get to whatever you're doing next, staying in the city for some time to do some sightseeing, or heading home. Generally, they will arrange transportation to an airport, but most often with an extra charge -- and may offer a bus tour of the city before heading to the airport, also for a fee. To be certain, the best thing is to call the cruise line. Since it's round-trip St. Louis for us, we're driving a small RV and plan to park it in one of the extended lots at a MetroLink station, then take the MetroLink downtown to the hotel. Wherever they drop us off, it will near a station to take us back to the RV. If you are traveling light, there is a MetroLink station at Lambert Field; a two-hour unlimited ticket is just $4 each. There is a half-price fare for seniors, but you have to apply in person.
Rare steamboats Posted June 2, 2015 #3 Share Posted June 2, 2015 The whole riverfront in St. Louis is being reconstructed. That´s why they can´t land and board there and have to go to Alton. steamboats
lake_wannabees Posted June 4, 2015 #4 Share Posted June 4, 2015 So glad to find this thread. We just booked Jul 19 from St Louis to St Paul but doing it as a TA familiarization cruise so the hotel the night before isn't included. Didn't know where we would stay but will now be looking on the Alton side.
Calliope Posted July 13, 2015 #5 Share Posted July 13, 2015 (edited) So glad to find this thread. We just booked Jul 19 from St Louis to St Paul but doing it as a TA familiarization cruise so the hotel the night before isn't included. Didn't know where we would stay but will now be looking on the Alton side. I would call the Memphis office to check daily on any potential changes to the AMERICAN QUEEN's itinerary. The boat may not be able to get to St. Louis due to high water on the lower Ohio and Mississippi River. There could be the possibility that you'll board the boat in Paducah, Kentucky and head up the Ohio to Cincinnati which is a beautiful stretch of river too with great stops.
