Tour or Taxi?

Hi,

Were interested in getting away from the tourist trap area (margaritaville,etc)... we want to go around the different areas of the island and learn about different things, see stuff, pictures, etc.

Found this trip islandtrams.com... a tram that goes around.. Seems interesting since the guide would be talking and stuff with stops... but 30$ per person?

It does seem like a trip that we can go down and negotiate the price while there on the beach.

But what about just a taxi? read some threads that people just negotiate a price with the driver.

So how much is that around for 3 of us?... I guess we also have to negotiate in advance that he stops at places so we can get out and shop or get a drink, etc?

Your thoughts?

Also is there a cost to get into the museum and prison?

I would like to know this also. We are thinking to negotiate a taxi tour. We have never been here before and will be arriving in December. Any advice would be appreciated.

If the tram is "hop on hop off" that's not too bad of a deal. Taxi to light house and back alone would cost $36 pp based on the zoned fare schedule.

However, as there's not that much to see outside of the few shops along the main drag in Cockburntown, the salt works, and the ligthhouse, other cruisers have had reasonable success negotiating taxi tours with local drivers from the port. These folks speak english and are very happy to talk about their island.

So walk out to the taxi/tram stand and ask around. As with any taxi in any port, be sure you are comfortable with the driver, and have the fare in hand before getting into the vehicle.

If you walk out to the parking lot you can arrange for a van to take you around.

That is what we have done and I would recommend.

The island is relatively small. If you go for three hours you can see a lot and make several stops.
