Hello, i am wondering if there is someone who can advise what train we need to catch from Yokohama to Takayama after our ship docks in Yokohama. Would it also be advisable to forward our luggage on? And where would we do this from in Yokohama?

Many thanks in advance 😊

You will need to take the Shinkansen from Yokohama to Nagoya and then transfer to a train or Shinkansen to Takayama. See the site below

There is suppose to be a luggage transport service at the port. You might contact Yamato Transport (Black Cat) by email to ask.

Where are you staying at in Takayam? We stayed at the Best Western and it was centrally located, especially if your going for the Spring or Fall Festival.

Thank you so much for your reply, it is much appreciated! We are staying at Takayama Kanko Hotel. We are so excited and can't wait to see beautiful Japan!

Oh and we will be there from April 20 for two weeks going to Hiroshima after Takayama 2 nights, then on to Osaka 3 nights, Kyoto 2 nights then Tokyo 4 nights. We may be lucky to see some cherry blossoms in bloom too (fingers crossed). Will look to hire some bikes also in Takayama and Kyoto to get around on also.

I think you will just miss the spring festival, it's on April 14, 2017. When we went for the spring festival, the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, very beautiful.

Are you going on the group tour? If not, have you purchased a JR Rail Pass? You have to purchase the pass before you get to Japan and then make reservations on the shinkansen when you get there. Do a search on Tripadivsors to find out what to do.

No we won't be on a group tour, we are doing our own thing. We haven't purchased our pass yet but we will definitely arrange before we go. I read somewhere that you can only purchase a pass a certain amount of time prior to arriving in Japan, is this true?

Correct on when to purchase a JR Rail pass, see below

The voucher can be exchanged for a 3-month period following the date of issue.

See the site for more information

As I mentioned, once you arrive, you have to make reservations on the Shinkansen at one of the JR Ticket offices. We did this at Narita, the office was on one of the floors below the arrival lounge. However, most of the major JR train stations have ticket offices. Be prepared to spend some time at the office based on the cities you are going to visit and have a good idea on when you want to take the train. As an alternative, you could make reservations for the first two cities and then make the rest of the reservations later. If you want to make reservations at Narita, you will have to find out what time the ticket office closes. Our plane landed about a hour before the office closed so we had to rush to make our reservations.

Takayama is gorgeous. The old part of the town is very easy to walk around. Make sure to try one of the local restaurants that specialize in Hida beef, cooked on magnolia leaves on individual hotplates. Delicious!

Think about doing a day trip to Nikko from Tokyo, one that offers lunch up at a high lakeside town. If you miss the cherry blossoms in Tokyo you might be lucky to see them there - we did.
