Hi All,

I’m cruising out of Galveston in February. I’ve heard great things about Galveston so we’re heading down the day before to see some of it.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what we should do in the short time we are there? Also, do you have any restaurant suggestions?

I found a place called Jimmy’s on the Pier; has anyone been there?

Is there a boardwalk type area with shops along the ocean? If so where do you suggest we start?

There is lots of history and shopping near the area known as The Strand. The Texas Seaport Museum and the tall ship Ellisa are great places to visit. Moody Gardens has history, a good aquarium and other exhibits. The Galveston Chamber of Commerce is a great resource for other tourist attractions.

As for restaurants, wow there are infinite choices depending on your tastes. Guido's is "old Gulf Coast" I went there as a child(57 now). There is a place called The Spot, which actually encompasses several restaurants. It is along the sea wall so you can look out into the Gulf from there. The Olympia grill is a little more upscale but very nice. It is near the pier where the cruise ships dock. Of course every chain known to man is there as well.

I love Galveston. Lots to do and see. Parts of it have a funky Key West feel and others are uniquely Galveston.

Enjoy!

Check out galvestonhistory.org for information on the Texas seaport Museum, tall ship Elissa, theater showing The Great Storm of 1900, Jean Lafitte, the Pirate and Immigration into Galveston (all about 20 minutes). GHF also has The Bishop's Palace on Broadway. Also at Pier 21 is the Ocean Star Drilling rig Museum - fascinating. Restaurants are Olympia at Pier 21, Nonno Tony;s Willie G's, Fisherman's Wharf and Joe's Crab Shack, though the local restaurants are where to go.

BTW: It is GAIDO's (not Guido's), a Galveston institution that also has Nick's (very casual) and The Pelican Club (behind on Ave T).

Jimmy's has great views over the Gulf (Note - paid parking on Seawall 8am-6pm).

The Spot is also a favorite for hamburgers; Rum Shack upstairs also serves food and there are several bars within the complex - on Seawall at 31st.

Galveston.com lists all the things to do and see in Galveston.

Enjoy our Island!
