what to wear

Recommended Posts

PS. If you think the P&O board on this forum was bad, you should have been a member on the P&O cruises facebook group. It was terrible on there, so much so that a new one popped up which is a lot more friendly, P&O Cruise Fans, and thankfully has all the decent P&O cruises on.

But have you bought the Really, Really, good book, Baggers? :);)

Very true, although I do pack a pair of smart shoes. I've found wearing smart trousers and a shirt don't go very well with flip flops :rolleyes:

I just use a standard pair of plain black rip tapes. Polished of course. They are only worn on cruises.

My DH would not take his dinner suit this last cruise as we were doing cruise and stay, but I persuaded him to take dark trousers, dress shirt and bow tie. A shirt and tie does not take up much space. What I never thought of was the shoes...so imagine my dismay when he was dressed for the Captains night, and I looked down to see him wearing brown casual shoes. Men! Don't think anyone noticed though.

I once had two pairs of shoes in the same stye but different colours (getting old!) and went out one night in one navy and one black!

I have Jakanne! Admittedly only purchased at the weekend before the last of the first batch sold out, but yes ordered it and waiting excitedly for it. Cruising in a couple of weeks so should be a good read and a bloody good laugh!

PS. Meant to say P&O Cruise Fans had all the decent P&O Cruisers on, I know it had good cruises lol.

And I admitted on their group that I was going on a Thomson Cruise, and didn't get shouted down or receive a Butlins comment!

I would even have mentioned cruising with another line, let alone Thomson on the P&O group. I removed myself from there though before I got booted!!!

On my first ever cruise i was also the same regarding wearing of a suit or evening suit , so never bothered , ate the Lido on the old Destiny (along with possibly only 2 other couples in the whole buffet area) going into the main bars casually dressed made me feel out of place when mostly everyone else was in evening wear (this was in the Med rather than the caribbean) , so the next cruise i got myself a cheap evening suit and haven't looked back , i see it as part of the holiday , its one night of the week and it does create a feeling of tradition (rather than bygone days :) ) and of course it allows my wife to dress up and bedeck herself in her full glittery swarovski collection !! :p

However absolutely no need to dress up if you don't want to , just passing on my experience from my first cruise

I have seen people on pando wearing flip flops .

really.

speaking of pando forum comments, have you seen the recent forum about people with tatoos being drunk on pando ships ?

Yes - not very edifying in respect of the people they are talking about - or some of the posters!

Seriously, smart trousers, a shirt AND flip flops? I haven't ever seen that, even on Thomson.

Haven't yet, but about to go and have a look through it now!

Whats the title of that particular thread?

It's been pulled Baggers. Got unpleasant with some derogatory stereotyping and some posters who clearly felt some people shouldn't be allowed to cruise on the basis of not being the right type (my words but the general impression I got from the comments). All put down to cut price deals. Shame really as the tone of the thread didn't reflect our experience of our time on board P&O or the people we met.

Fair enough, that's why I couldn't find it then!

So if certain people (snobs?!?) don't want to cruise with certain types, why are they cruising on P&O? Shouldn't they be on a ultra all inclusive ship, or Cunard Grill suites?

PS. It is definitely rhetorical, not trying to start another thread lol.

I've unfortunately encountered snobs on Thomson, but I've been lucky enough to laugh it off and wonder what they were doing on the wrong ship. Last year's TA though, I have to admit was the friendliest cruise I've ever been on, with easily over 99% of the people were met were easy going and friendly!

We had reservations about travelling on other cruise lines on the basis of loving the people, crew and ambience on Thomson. Having said that we've found every ship on different cruise lines we've been has proved to be a very pleasant experience. Perhaps like many other social media sites it's easier to say some of these things anonymously - and on board as you say they may well be in the areas and dining rooms reserved for those who can afford the top suites.

Yes we found the TA we did last autumn a great atmosphere too. I think you are all 'in it together' for quite a long trip and on board for more days than usual so I think you spend more time socialising and chatting to your fellow passengers as well as getting involved more with the activities/entertainment on board. Thought I'd hate the sea days (only did it to do Havana again) but thoroughly enjoyed it! So sometimes trying something new can be a revelation. :)

We were once on a Thomson cruise when a lady at our table said 'Oh we're going on a proper cruise next month' (i.e. with a cruise line she considered superior!). You can imagine it went down like a lead balloon with the other diners! One lady said 'Oh yes and where will this REAL cruise take you?'. Everyone shared a knowing smile as it was clear what we all thought of her comments. However, she wasn't so proud that she hadn't been prepared to take a last minute deal and revel in telling us how little she'd paid. Hypocrite!

We loved it that much we're off again in two weeks time! We, like you, were a little worried about the 6 days at sea, but they went so quickly with lots to do, although this time, as there will be more sunbeds, think a bit of relaxation will be on the cards.

In fact we loved it that much, we very nearly did the return crossing in April as it came up 3 days before departure for £530pp for us. It was highly tempting I can tell you!

Haha, so probably a 'real cruise' that sails from Southampton, meaning you have 2-3 days wasted at the start and end of the cruise getting to where you want to go, and through the Bay of Biscay.

Admittedly, we're more fans of fly-cruises, as at least you get to the action straight away and have longer cruising where you want to go! That's why, apart from the Ffords, which we haven't done yet, only P&O's Caribbean fly-cruises appeal to us at the moment. We might do one next year if some of the late bargain prices pop back up again! Balcony cabins for £999pp for a 14 night fly-cruise (Beat that Thomson!!!) is an absolute bargain! It's unfortunate that the Celebration doesn't really appeal to us, and the Dream's 14 night itineraries aren't that cheap really, so unless we do another TA with Thomson next year, it'll more than likely be P&O!
