Hello Daisi,

AnhaltER1960 has obviously already answered your question but as you mentioned canals: there are indeed a couple of those lift locks in other parts of Germany on canals. One I have been able to see in action myself is one not far from the Rhine, on the Marne Rhine canal in France about an hour's drive from Strasbourg. It is called thePlan incliné de Saint-Louis/Arzviller and here is the Englsih wikipedia website: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Louis-Arzviller_inclined_plane You can see videos if it on youtube. Fascinating engineering.

Thanks AnhaltER1960 & Notamermaid for the replys. Notamermaid, that is different from our lift locks, quite interesting. We didn't quite make it up to the rail lock (much the same as a lift, but instead of going up, the boats are carried by rail over a road). I wish we could have the time to get to that lock...maybe someday we can return.
