Mazatlan...walkable from Old town to Zona Dorado?

Hi

We're going to be there for a day in a couple of weeks and was wondering if we could go to the old town area and then walk to the golden zone? If so, approximately how long does it take? Is it relatively safe? I'm a Chicagoan at heart so not much scares me. Also is it easy to get a taxi/open-air car from the golden zone back to port?

I keep reading about the 'blue line' and was wondering where that ran and realistically how far off we can wander?

Most find a Pulmonías Taxi (go out the in terminal in gate and bargain for $20 per hour... or per ride... they are everywhere)

Thanks! The Pulmonías look like fun. We do like to walk, so maybe 5 miles on the ocean will be ok. Are the Pulmonías easy to get in the golden zone so we can get back? 10 miles will be too much :)

Well, you can walk...but it is quite a hike. I guess it depends on how you want to maximize your time in port. As I recall, things didn't look too sketchy along that route. If you insist on walking the whole way, just be aware of your surroundings.

Seriously, take a pulmonia. They are very easy to find, not that expensive, and they are really fun to ride! Just make sure you agree on a negotiated fare before you jump in. We hired a driver for a few hours to take us around to some fun sites and stops (lunch at El Papagayao, sculpture stops along the Malacon, Teatro Angela Peralta, Ice Box Hill--great photos of the ship from that vista). They can go pretty fast darting in and out of traffic, but it was a great experience riding with the breeze in your face. We had a blast!

Thanks for the info. Can I ask approximately how much you paid for a day of being driven around? And do they wait for you, i.e. If you are shopping or eating?

at the end of your stroll through the cruise terminal, there is a motor court

directly to the right is the out gate, it will be mobbed with folks

walk past all this mayhem to the AUTO IN GATE.

stop, relax

send your best negotiator out the in gate

go for $20 +/- per hour, try for a kind looking elderly driver (like the one pictured)

Have the Pulmonías driver take you to the Playa Bruha (10 miles north, cool drink on the beach), and then work your way back, stop by El Cid (high 5 your fellow cruiser's and check out the beach play/view, then briefly see the Golden zone shopping, then tour Old Town, then have him drop you off near the ship at the Stone Island Ferry (pay him off & enjoy a stone island visit).

You have now see many MANY beautiful Mazatlan sights

Start off at the Playa Bruha (end of beach on left)

Then heading back south, tour around the Marina (from left to right)

Then Stop by El Cid and see the Islands, Beach play, pool areas, and greet many of your fellow cruisers

Then stop at a Playa Norte beach front Palapa for a fish taco

Then mix it up with the locals at the old town market and cathedral

Then wrap it up with a visit to stone island

maybe try a $20 horse ride on the beach

Take a water taxi back and walk (or taxi) the 1/4 mile to the cruise terminal

Then relax in the cruise terminal

thumpersmom, you can hire a taxi to take you all around the city, and they will wait for you. Negotiate the fare before you step foot inside the vehicle. $20 an hour sounds about right. Lots of fun things to see and do. Nothing like sitting on a warm, sunny beach with an ice cold Pacifico in your hand (speaking of Pacifico, the brewery is located in Mazatlan and they give tours!)

That price is USD.

The exchange rate for pesos is about 14 to 1 dollar.

The water taxi terminal is probably what you are looking for. It is about 3 or 4 blocks from the cruise terminal. You go out to the street and go to your left. The street turns away to the right and you walk straight ahead on a dirt road to the end.

They both go to Stone Island. The one several miles away is much busier, and the taxi drops you off in the "middle of the village". There's (was) a tortilla shop and a few other commercial buildings there, not much. We did a tour with Randi's horses many years ago and she used this taxi service.

The one a few blocks west of the terminal drops you off near the tip of the peninsula. This is the one we use.

If you look at the satellite view from google earth/maps you can see the docks on SI.

When going thru the village we saw two guys with a mountain of dried coconuts in their yard. Got closer and saw they were making monkey heads.

When we were there a few years ago, we saw monkey heads for sale in the Mercado Municipal for a few bucks.

Is it one you would consider safe to walk alone (a lady alone)?

About how much would it be to take a pulmonia?
