petlover Posted November 21, 2004 #1 Share Posted November 21, 2004 We will be docking in Naha, Okinawa for 1 day. Any suggestions as to what to do or see? Is this port stop doable on our own?
wharf rat Posted April 18, 2005 #2 Share Posted April 18, 2005 Petlover... Have you been there ? I am also looking for info as to shp docking near "downtown" , etc. What to do on your own, or taking cruise ship tours? Any info? Thanks....
brodie Posted June 19, 2005 #3 Share Posted June 19, 2005 Having lived in Okinawa for 3 years I have to say there are a ton of things to do. If you are into diving this is the place for you. Okinawa has miles of reefs and people from all over the worlf flock there to see the many different varities of sea life. You can also tour some old Japenese castles and get an idea of what Okinawa was like prior to the American invasion during WWII. Hit Google and do a search of Kadena Air Base. This is an Air Force Base web site that will be able to guide you in the right direction as far as activities. The island is not that large and you can drive for South(Naha) to the North in a couple of hours. Do not leave without sampling some KOBE beef. I still crave this meal years after leaving. Hope you enjoy the people of Okinawa! They are a kind and gentle society.;)
ARTGRL Posted July 15, 2005 #4 Share Posted July 15, 2005 are there taxis at the pier or is a private guide preferable?
Druke I Posted August 2, 2005 #5 Share Posted August 2, 2005 If your ship offers a tour of Shuri Castle, it is worth the time. I was based on Okinawa for 2 1/2 years (Army) in the 50s - stopped there en route to HongKong in 90 or 91 - hardly recognized the island, it had changed so much. (Paved roads, no more benjo ditches or honeybuckets, etc!)
