LUPY48 Posted September 16, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 16, 2006 I checked TSA and couldn't find out anything about this. Anyone know?
Rare LHT28 Posted September 16, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 16, 2006 I don't think they can be in carry -on but just ask at the ticket counter before you release your checked baggage then you can just slip it in the checked bag
LUPY48 Posted September 16, 2006 Author #3 Share Posted September 16, 2006 Thanks LHT, I was picturing me running back to the car and having to stash it someplace, lol. Thanks
jcanino Posted September 16, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 16, 2006 I checked TSA and couldn't find out anything about this. Anyone know? Here is the list of what is and is not allowed. People have argued that a remote starter or key fob to unlock your car could detonate something in the belly of the plane, but others say that there is too much steel between the passengers and the cargo for it to work. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm
karen2cruz Posted September 16, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 16, 2006 Wasnt a problem for us two weeks go. Guess it depends which airports you fly into or out of and the local TSA!
Globaliser Posted September 17, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 17, 2006 ... but others say that there is too much steel between the passengers and the cargo for it to work. These "others" obviously don't know what an aircraft is made of! It's not steel. :D
jcanino Posted September 17, 2006 #7 Share Posted September 17, 2006 These "others" obviously don't know what an aircraft is made of! It's not steel. :D For the most part, it is sheet metal and composite materials, but I have read that in areas where high heat may be expected, steel is used. Darklady Posted September 18, 2006 #8 Share Posted September 18, 2006 Just got home from our cruise a couple of days ago... my remote entry fob was in my purse on the way down (Sept. 9) and on the way back (Sept. 16) with no issues... wasn't even questioned about it on either side of the border (4 rounds of security screening with all the various flights, too)
edste Posted September 20, 2006 #9 Share Posted September 20, 2006 We just flew from Florida to NYC and it was not a problem. I even took my vitamins in a 7 day carrier and I wasn't questioned about it either.
JJPNYC Posted September 21, 2006 #10 Share Posted September 21, 2006 One thing I have heard that has been confiscated at security are some of the switchblade type car keys that are now being used (primarily by high-end imports). The thinking of the confiscation is that the switchblade design could be dangerous. I've also heard that these keys cost a pretty penny, so if you find yourself with keys like this, it might not be a bad idea to check them in your suit case so you don't get your car keys confiscated. In addition to costing alot to replace, there's also then the issue of how to drive yourself home when you arrive back.
LUPY48 Posted September 30, 2006 Author #11 Share Posted September 30, 2006 Quick update: just returned from Vegas on SW. No problem with either the remote start key fob or the 'switch blade' type key.
