Does anyone know any day trips from Singapore that are of don't miss quality?

Thanks

I have been researching tours of Singapore as well as tours to Malaysia from Singapore. We will be there next March.

Must See Sights

Orchard Road - This area spans three MRT stops and has a high concentration of modern malls. MRT Dhoby Ghaut, Somerset and Orchard.

Merlion - This half lion, half fish fountain is the symbol of Singapore. The original one is downtown (MRT Raffles Place) with a copy on Sentosa Island.

Chinatown - This area is full of outdoor markets and restaurants. Sample some bakkwa (see below) and visit the Hindu temple. MRT Chinatown.

Marina Bay Sands - This brand new complex features a rooftop swimming pool and observation deck. The swimming pool is only for guests but the observation deck is open to the public. The casino is in the large mall across the street. MRT Bayfront (opened Jan 2012) or walk across the Helix bridge from MRT Promenade.

Gardens by the Bay - Opened in 2012, these gardens near Marina Bay Sands include conservatories and covered domes.

Sentosa Island - This area includes Universal Studios, a casino, beaches, restaurants and many tourist attractions. The top attractions are Fort Silo and Underwater World. Take the monorail from Vivocity, cable car from Harbourfront or bus.

Little India - come to this neighbourhood for authentic indian food

Singapore Zoo - This world class zoo is one of Singapore's top attractions. You'll need to take the MRT to Ang Mo Kio and then bus 138 or MRT to Khatib and then taxi to get here. Night safaris are also offered in the evening.

ANOTHER OPTION

Original Walking Tours of Singapore

http://www.journeys.com.sg/singaporewalks/index.asp

The Original Singapore Walks®

“If you just do one tour in Singapore, make it one of these.” – Lonely Planet

Take the road less travelled with guides who are experts of the city. The brainchild of one military historian and several precocious enfants terribles of Singapore's heritage-education scene, these narrated Walks and War Trails are spontaneous and revealing as their fraternities in other cities are. Be thoroughly entertained as you visit cultural and historical enclaves, while affable researcher-guides, through skilful storytelling and the use of archival images, regale you with juicy insights to local society and traditions. With a different tour guaranteed to run most days of the week, you only need to turn up on the scheduled day, at the scheduled time and meeting point (mostly at MRT station exits), pay the guide and off you go!

Changi Museum War Trails™

Launched concurrently with the Walks, End of Empire™—Singapore 1942™ (Tue) and Changi WWII™ (Wed/Sat) relate the story of the Defence and Fall of Singapore during WWII and are dedicated to the memory of all who fought and suffered during those dark years of captivity.

These motorcoach-facilitated guided trails revisit selected WWII sites that lend varied perspectives to the disastrous manner by which Singapore believed to be impregnable succumbed to Japanese forces on the 15th of February, 1942. Find out what really happened, as we take you through grand strategies, explosive action and intense drama, while debunking long-held myths and exposing deceptive propaganda. Contemplate the magnitude of human tragedy and the response of selfless camaraderie in the face of death. Vividly recounted and sensitively portrayed by specialised researcher-guides, few have left these trails unmoved.

To go on Changi Museum War Trails™, you are encouraged to phone (63251631 / 62142451) or email by 5pm the day before to reserve your place(s).

(This helps us in doing our bit for the environment by not over catering coach transport, thereby reducing unnecessary exhaust emissions.)

Do I need to book in advance?

There is no need to for scheduled walks. Simply turn up on the day, at the time and meeting point stated on the schedule, pay the guide and off you go. In the rare events of an unusually large turn-out or a single walker, the tour goes on (sometimes with an additional guide) and no one will be turned away.

(Having said that, for parties of 8 or more, it is advisable to call or email us a few days in advance should a particular walk be known to be quite full.)

For Secrets of the Red Lantern™ and Changi Museum War Trails™, we encourage reservations via phone (63251631 / 62142451) or email by 5pm the day before. This helps us in doing our bit for the environment by not over catering coach transport, thereby reducing unnecessary exhaust emissions.

If you have a group of 20 or more, we strongly recommend a separate tour just for your group. Please send in your request by filling out the enquiry form at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead.

Where is the tour meeting point? Is there a hotel pick-up?

The tour meeting points are mostly at MRT station exits (above ground) or at the entrance of a museum. The meeting point varies depending on the walk or coach trail of your choice. Please refer to the schedule or click on any scheduled tour of your choice in the column on your right for the designated meeting point and map directions. Hotel pick-ups are currently not available.

How do I recognise the guide?

That would be the person waving our brochures madly in the air. Alternatively, look out for a group forming at the meeting point and the guide who is wearing a Singapore Tourism Board guide badge.

Chinatown in general, including the Sri Mariaman Hindu Temple and the Buddha Tooth Temple, and Kampong Glam, which is the old Islamic area.

Oh, and Gardens By The Bay, a great outdoor attraction with a couple of amazing indoor domed gardens, and don't forget the hawker centre nearby (food court.)

to 4774Papa,

Wow! That was quite a report on Singapore, etc. We've been to Singapore years ago and are returning next February on a cruise. We'll also be going to Malacca and Kuala Lumpur. Are you taking a cruise or doing it on your own? I think we touched base before re a Russian river boat tour several years ago.

Good job!

Sheila,

We are doing the Celebrity Century's next to last cruise, Singapore to Dubai, March 2015.

That Vantage trip and cruise to Russia was a great one.

When do you plan to go to Singapore?

Where is the night market in singapore? Can you bargain there and what do they have there?

I haven't researched shopping, since we are in our 60s and rarely shop much on trips, except for occasional small art, guide books or perhaps a coffee mug.

There are good day markets in Chinatown & Little India, not sure what time they close but you can bargain freely.

Thanks

I'm not sure if you mean day trips around Singapore or from Singapore.

There are some good ideas in the above posts but if you want to get out of Singapore I'd say Melaka is a "don't miss".

The list there is quite extensive and well thought.

The highlights from our many trips to Singapore have been the following

Afternoon tea at the Raffles

Orchid Gardens

Evening outdoor shows on Sentosa island

Although dont miss our no 1 choice the Gardens by the Bay specifically the undercover gardens (Cloud Forest and Flower Dome) the beauty coupled with the cool respite from the Singapore Heat are an experience that is priceless

and i am not even a florist or horticulturalist
