Rare HeinBloed Posted June 25, 2007 #2 Share Posted June 25, 2007 I'm going to Frankfurt for business in a few weeks and wanted to do a day trip to Rudesheim to go on a Rhine Valley cruise. Has anyone done this and does anyone have any recommendations? Hello, Ruedesheim and Drosselgasse... and "Germania" (The Niederwald Monument) http://www.ruedesheim.de/en/index.html I would recommend it to combine it additionally with Upper Central Rhine Valley and Loreley http://www.tal-der-loreley.de/impressionen/impressionen.01.en.php http://www.welterbe-mittelrheintal.de/index.php?id=318&L=3 So take the ship to St. Goarshausen from Frankfurt: http://www.primus-linie.de/007/cnt/routenkarte.htm Visit Loreley Rock and enjoy Heinrich Heine's Loreley Song Take train on the right-side of the Rhine back to Rüdesheim. Visit Drosselgassel and the Niederwald Monument. Say hello to "Germania". Have a visit to the wineyards and enjoy a wine tasting and German food. Later you can go to Wiesbaden http://english.wiesbaden.de/frame.php?menue=touristik/tourist_service/menue.php&content=touristik/tourist_service/index.php&werbeseite=/banner/Tourist_Service.php Maybe a little bit gambling in the classical Casino: http://www.spielbank-wiesbaden.de/EN/216/Willkommen.php Or dining in one of the best restaurants in Germany: http://www.nassauer-hof.de/go/ente "Prost" (Cheers) and have a great time at the Rhine Willkommen in Deutschland Welcome to Germany HeinBloed
mochuck Posted June 26, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted June 26, 2007 Thankyou so much heinbloed! How much of that could be realistically done in one day? It looks a lot. We were thinking of catching a train to Rudesheim from Frankfurt (I think its 64km) and then do a castle round trip. Last time I was there, I remember there being a hotel which was the oldest continuous running hotel in Europe. I can't remember the name of it but thought it might be nice for lunch. Do you know the one I'm talking about and do you know the name?
Rare HeinBloed Posted June 26, 2007 #4 Share Posted June 26, 2007 Good Morning, I do not hope that you are talking about Burg Gutenfels in Kaub http://rhinecastles.com/castle-gutenfels-rhine-germany/index.html This I cannot recommend as once I stayed there - never again! What day are planning to go? Let me check if all can done on one day! Regards HeinBloed
mochuck Posted June 26, 2007 Author #5 Share Posted June 26, 2007 No, I don't think it was that hotel, I think it was Hotel Krone? We arrive early on 14th July and wanted to do the day trip to Rudesheim on the Sunday 15th July. Is Weisbaden on the same train line from Frankfurt to Rudesheim? If so, we could possibly stop to go to the casino on the way back. Maybe even for dinner. Bearing in mind that we will have been out touring all day do you know what the dress code is at the casino in Weisbaden?
Rare HeinBloed Posted June 26, 2007 #6 Share Posted June 26, 2007 Yes - you can do it all on one single day: 15.07.2007: 07.53 hrs from Frankfurt Hbf (Central Station-platform 23) RE 15004 09.25 hrs at St. Goarshausen (16.40 EUR pp standard fare / 33.00 EUR Happy-Weekend-Ticket for parties of 2 upto 5) Walk around St. Goarshausen 10.15 hrs from St. Goarshausen Market Square (not station) Bus 595 10.27 hrs at Loreley Parking (better than Visitor Center to climb on the rock!) (1.45 EUR pp standard fare / 5.90 EUR Day pass for parties 3 upto 5) 11.15 hrs from Loreley Parking Bus 595 11.25 hrs at St. Goarshausen Rhine Pier for KD-River Cruises (1.45 EUR pp standard fare / parties of 3 upto 5 already covered in day pass) 11.37 hrs take the ferry to St. Goar (so you can make the best pictures) (1.30 EUR pp) Walk around St. Goar 12.20 hrs from St. Goar Rhine Pier for KD-River Cruises the "GOETHE" Paddle-Steamer (like on the Mississippi) of KD-Lines 15.15 hrs at Rüdesheim (14.90 EUR pp but against presentation of train ticket 20% discount + 1.60 EUR steam-ship-surcharge) http://www.koeln-duesseldorfer.de/englisch/kd-flotte/dampfer-goethe.html The river cruise is the best to see all the old castles. Walk around Rüdesheim, see the Drosselgasse, enjoy a wine and get to the Niederwald Memorial http://www.seilbahn-ruedesheim.de/englisch/infos.html Take the cable car - operation ends at 19.00 hrs. Tickets round trip 6.50 EUR pp. 18.56 (20.10) from Rüdesheim (RE 10) 19.24 (20.44) at Wiesbaden Hbf (Central Station) (3.55 EUR pp standard-fare, parties of 2 upto 5 are already covered in the Happy-Weekend-Ticket) Go have a great dinner. A jacket will be great - you'll need it later for the casino. No jeans. Ties and jackets normally available to borrow at German Casinos free of charge subject you do not have jeans or shorts and shirt which you just can add a tie and you are not extremely oversized. If you just want to play machines is no problem: no dress code. But have your passport with you for registration!!! Last 3 connections back to Frankfurt 23.27 (23.50) (00.06) from Wiesbaden Hbf (Central Station - S9 - S8 - S1-trains) 00.13 (00.43) (00.48) to Frankfurt Hbf (Central Station) (6.60 EUR pp standard-fare, parties of 2 upto 5 are already covered in the Happy-Weekend-Ticket) So I think you can have a great day on 15.07.2007. The schedule fits and you can experience a lot. Regards, HeinBloed
mochuck Posted June 26, 2007 Author #7 Share Posted June 26, 2007 Wow, thanks for all your research. I had seen about the happy weekend pass. I will have to see if I can talk my colleagues into doing all (or most of what) you suggested. We will be flying in from Australia the day before (21 hr flight), so may be a little tired. I suspect we might forgo the Casino and just go back to Frankfurt exhausted as it is. I am so grateful to you for looking all this up for me heinbloed. The English speaking websites don't give as much information as you were able to gather. garfieldtx Posted May 1, 2009 #8 Share Posted May 1, 2009 I am also flying in to Frankfurt on Sat morning and i need to get to Bremen by sunday night. I would like to see if i can take a river ride in Rhine to see the castle and then go to see the catheral in Colonge. Is that possible? I am thinking of going to Rüdesheim via Bahn from Frankfurt and then board on to the KB line to go up to Colonge. however, I can't find any info on how to get to Rüdesheim(Rhein). First of all, is this the best option to see all surroundings or there are other options? Second, how can i find more info and train/bus schedule? Sorry that I cannot tell you in detail as I am on a jump to my own cruise. http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml is website you need. 1. nicest way: take the boat to Cologne as this cruise is shorter than v.v. return by IC/ICE trains from Cologne via Bonn - Koblenz - Mainz back to Frankfurt alongside of the river rine. 2. fastest way: same again return by ICE High-Speed-Trains from Cologne via Siegburg/Bonn back to Frankfurt in about hour with 180 miles/hour. 3. cheapest way: same again return by regional trains along side of the river rhine 37.00 EUR (flat-rate for all Germany in Regional Trains on a Weekend Day) Rüdesheim is connected via the Frankfurt - Wiesbaden - Lahnstein - Koblenz line. All you need to do is checking for your connection on the link which I posted above. If you are not going this weekend I can give you more help next week. I think Ruedesheim is relatively difficult to get to from Frankfurt airport by public transport. But it would be very easy to get a train from Frankfurt airport to Mainz, from where some of the K-D line river cruises depart. I think that you may be being a little optimistic on timing, however. This summer, it looks like there is one sailing a day from Mainz to Koeln, taking 11¼ hours. It probably departs too early for you: 0845. An alternative is to change trains at Mainz and go to Bingen to pick up the river cruise there; it's the first call after Ruedesheim. But if you also want to see Koeln cathedral, you'd probably be best to hop off at Koblenz and then get a train to Koeln - some ICs taking less than an hour. By then you will have done the prettiest part of the river, which is between Ruedesheim/Bingen and Koblenz. Obviously, seeing this from the river is going to be a slow way of covering the miles, but it's wonderfully relaxing. But you need to think about what you're going to do with your luggage. How much have you got? Is it feasible to take it with you on the river cruise? How are you going to get from Koeln to Bremen? That's about three hours on the train. Rare HeinBloed Posted May 1, 2009 #11 Share Posted May 1, 2009 I think Ruedesheim is relatively difficult to get to from Frankfurt airport by public transport. Sorry, but that's not true: ICE high-speed-train or S-Bahn-Commuter-Train to Wiesbaden is available and then direct transfer to Regional Trains to Rüdesheim. Rüdesheim is easy to walk from station to pier. Mainz is not easy to walk. Bingen you must meet the correct train which stops there. If someone likes to board in Rüdesheim it has also something to do to add additional attractions like Niederwald-Memorial (Germania) or Drosselgasse. Both of those points are fair enough, although I suspect that garfieldtx won't have time to add extra sights to an already-tight itinerary. However, to balance against that, I see faster trips to Bingen via Mainz than to Ruedesheim via Wiesbaden.
