Patmos, Greece

We're taking a Med cruise on Royal Princess in november and one of the ports is Tapmos,

Greece. Does anyone know anything about this place? :confused: We've been to a lot of places in Greece, but never heard of this place. Help!!!!!

Patmos is a very quiet island with many nice beaches and the top attraction is the "Monastery of Apocalypse" (or "Monastery of St. John") where St. John write the "Apocalypse": http://www.angelfire.com/art2/greekislands/patmos/monst/index.html

you can go there with a taxi (taxi station is at port and cost 15-20 euros both ways)...

How long does it take to get to and tour the monastery? Do you know of any good beaches to spend the afternoon?

Here are a few visual samples from Patmos in the Greek Isles. Its history is very unique and meaningful. You go in the cave where St. John the Evangelist received his message from God. This site is considered to be a Holy Place because of how it caused St. John the Evangelist to write the Book of Revelation (Apocalypse). We visited this Holy Cave where John received the Revelation. It is now a destination for pilgrims. Another very significant religious site is the Holy Monastery of St. John on one of the highest points of the island. This monastery, towering above the main village of Chora, can be seen from almost every corner on the island. It is a fairly small island of thirteen square miles with only 3000 residents. Both the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse are Unesco World Heritage sites.

Since the island (and population) is small are cabs easy to find to get to, and more importantly back, from the beaches? While on Mykanos last summer we found cabs few-and-far between!!

THANKS for the kind comments on the pictures by my "neighbor" from northern Ohio! We did a ship tour and it worked out well for that morning. Therefore, I wasn't paying much attention to the availability of cabs. You might consider that between the cost of the cabs up and then back, plus admissions, etc., that the ship tour might be a little more in cost, but it could save lots of worries and hassles. The monastery and cave are up on a hill that would be a serious challenge for walking. Possible, but a long walk, especially on a hot day. Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Recently back from a June 7-19 Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik.
