Travel insurance coverage question

Recommended Posts

My travel insurance states it covers trip cancellation in the event of:

a) Sickness, Accidental Injury or death of You, Traveling Companion, or Family Member which results in medically imposed restrictions as certified by a Physician at the time of loss preventing Your continued participation in the Trip. A Physician must advise cancellation of the Trip on or before the Scheduled Departure Date.

I am very sick & my cruise is a week away. If my doctor says I am too sick to travel, would that cover my family members that have booked the cruise also along with the same insurance? They won't go without me.

I'm not sure, but I would say it will not cover others. You should contact your insurance carrier and ask them, they would be the best source to help you. Good Luck!

I beg to differ. Everyone would claim against their individual policy. Who is covered does depend on the individual policy definition of 'Family Member' as listed in the DOC; immediate family yes, cousins usually not, grandparents and in-laws vary by company. Others may meet the definition of Traveling Companion-meaning booked together (same room or booking number) or same ship/ date booked by same TA at essentially same time with same travel destinations, again depending on company.

More importantly, your sickness must not be excluded as a pre-existing condition. Assuming your Dr. Recommends you cancel, this is not due to a PEC, and all your family members and traveling companions meet the definition, then this should be covered. Call your policy issuer and ask, but realize that they can only give a hypothetical answer based on the described circumstances. The actual decision will be based on the written documentation you (and everyone else) provide when filing the claim.
