lindaler Posted October 24, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 24, 2014 We will be visiting this port in Nov. 2014 and just learned that there is a turtle hatchery about 15 miles away. We can not find any information about tours here. We did learn that Nov. and Dec. are the best for viewing egg hatching and releases. Since it is not that far from the port we wondered if anyone else had visited here.
lindaler Posted October 29, 2014 Author #2 Share Posted October 29, 2014 I spoke to an excursion lady about this and asked if she had any information but she had not heard about the turtle hatchery. If no one else has been there, I will give more information when we return.

lindaler Posted December 5, 2014 Author #4 Share Posted December 5, 2014 Well, our cruise ship pulled in and was going to be here for five hours. We headed off the ship and went straight to the taxi area. In this port the taxi has a big board with prices all posted. Even talking to the boss of the one company that was there the price remained the same. It was $140 to go the 12.67 miles and back. There was an hour rate of $50 and we offered to pay that but they said it was for an hour of driving around town, not going away from the town. We tried for an hour to find a solution but finally gave up. So we did not get to go to the turtle reserve even though we met other passengers who had gone about three years ago and loved it. Maybe in a few years the taxi company will learn they will make more by working more loosely with their customers and not base everything on a posted board. It's too late now; however, the hatchery is somewhere in Monterrico and it does appear that the releases are after 5:30 PM. It looks to be about 37.6 km down the coast. More information: From September to February, every day, CECON (Conservation Center of Studies – University of Guatemala, San Carlos) allows people to join in the release of baby turtles from their hatchery. Information to Release the Turtles Arrive around 5 pm to the CECON Hatchery to buy your ticket Check out this link: http://travelexperta.com/2013/10/releasing-baby-turtles-monterrico-guatemala.html
