Insects in Europe?

I lived in Germany for four years and traveled a lot in Europe. I don't ever remember having an insect problem like we have in South Georgia.

In fact, our apartment in Germany did not have screens, since you didn't need them.

We are new cruisers, and are booked on the Amadolce Paris to Amsterdam in July 2012. What can we expect in terms of flying insects (flies, mosquitoes, etc.)?

We were on the Arles to Chalon river cruise a couple of weeks ago and were warned to not leave our balcony doors open because of mosquitos and the final day I wore a bright yellow shirt and little black knats nearly ate me alive. Another passenger with lime green on had the same problem. So I would suggest stay away from those two colors! Other than that - no problems.
