we passed some nice beaches and walked to one while others were shopping. it seems like the nicer ones were for hotel guests. maybe you can find some beachfront hotels online and see if they offer day passes to their beach.

I was hoping some one would suggest a nice public beach at Boca Grande. I did read that a bus from the walled city to Boca Grande is very cheap. Don't know if it is public or not but next to Boca Grande is Playa Castillo Grande. Futher away & outside of the city is Boquilla. Futher still is Manzanillo.

Still hoping for some more info.

We passed a nice, long beach when we toured Cartagena last year.

It was West of the Hotel Caribe (remember this is the hotel that our secret service had a few problems in).........

Looking at Google maps, it is on Lago De Boca Grande.

Google Hotel Caribe, Cartagena and you'll see the map. A long, long beach to the West.

Looked OK...everyone was under some sort of sun screens; few were out in the sun. It seemed strange to us as Barbados is at 9.5 degrees north and we rarely seek shade....but maybe that is the custom in Cartagena (?)

Please let us know what you found on your trip! :)

We just got back from our cruise. We walked outside of the terminal area, through the zoo area and grabbed a taxi. We told him to take us to Boca Grande. The beach was brown sand & well maintained. There were chairs & cover available for 3.00 @. The water was very warm & the waves were fun. Yes there were plenty of vendors selling things & a firm no was enough.

We paid our driver 20 each way. We were told by another couple thet paid 15 each way.

We had our driver pick us up at a set time. There were plenty of taxis driving past. There were vendors selling food & drink. There was a bar right by where we were. Which had a restroom.

Was the water a beautiful Caribbean color? Did it feel like a Caribbean beach? Thanks!

For pretty Caribbean color beaches you will need to go to islands off the coast such as Playa Blanca, which is just a 15 minute boat road from Cartagena.

Pic of Playa Blanca. You can google image search more:

Beaches in Cartagena are not nice and water and sand are dark. I am told that's because all the city's sewage is flushed right into the ocean. You have been warned.

Do a Google search on "Cartagena beaches raw sewage" if you don't believe me.
