DIY walking tour

My family and I will be in San Juan on a short stop (7a-2p) at the end of July. I have read multiple threads about how it is walkable (yet hot and humid), and there is a free trolley to assist in transportation. Since we will be arriving in Oasis, can someone tell me if there is a map that can be obtained (either from the ship or a tourist info place near the cruise port) to aid in directions? We would like to try to see the forts and experience some of the city.

Is there anything that is a must see for a 9year old boy and 6year old girl?? (I think the fortresses would be fascinating for them). Anything else we should be sure to see?

I'm not expecting we will be off the ship right when it docks, and I'd like to be back on the boat about an hour before it leaves, so I'm thinking we'll have 5 hours-ish......

take a self guided tour of El Morro. Its about a 15-20 minute scenic walk from the pier. If I recall it is 6 bucks per adult to get in. Very neat place...but be prepared for a little bit of a hike if you plan to explore the entire fort. Its a neat place with great views. I would say to plan 3 hours or so for the walk over, the fort visit and the walk back. That will leave you with a little time to walk through some of the many shops if you choose.

Awesome information. We will be leaving out of SJ and thinking about spending 2 days there ahead of time and this will be something to do. Anything anyone highly suggest as a "must see"? I'm really not in to looking at forts, but wouldn't mind getting some awesome pictures up there of the water and an overview. I assume there's a charge to get in? Is there a way to get pictures of the ocean from up there without having to go into the fort?

I really don't remember if there was a place to take pictures without going into the forts. But it only cost $5pp to get into both forts. And the views are great. From Castillo San Cristobal you can get great views of your ship in port. Also it is neat to go into the lookout posts that look like small castle towers.

If you happen to have a National Park Pass it can get you and 3 other persons in without an extra charge.
