We didn't visit Trowulan, but had an excellent Surabaya old town tour with Authentic Java Tours (http://www.authenticjavatours.com). Our guide , Graeme, is a British ex-pat who worked for the British Council in Indonesia for many years. The tour was fascinating, particularly the Dutch colonial architecture and heritage stuff, along with visits to local markets and a mosque. We ended our day with a drink at the delightful Majapahit Hotel (the Raffles of Indonesia).

Graeme will customise tours and if Trowlan is a possibility he will organise it.

I just checked his website and he does offer a one day tour to Trowlan.
