Halifax timing question

Recommended Posts

We will get into port at 7:00 am ship time. We are renting a car from Enterprise which opens at 8:00 am (not sure if it's ship time or Atlantic Standard time). We plan to drive to Peggy's Cove, stop for lobster at Ryder's Lobster Pound and want to see the Titanic graves in Fairview Cemetary.

Questions, is Halifax and the ship on the same time or not. Secondly, should we drive to Peggy's Cove first to miss the tour busses or do we have time to do the Fairview Cemetary first and then Peggy's Cove? Should we wait to get the rental car later and have the chance to sleep in? When does Peggy's Cove get crowded?

It depends on the cruise line you are sailing on. NCL and HAL change time so ship time is Halifax time. CCL does not change time so 7am ship time is 8am Halifax time. If it is not one of these 3 lines, the specific board for your cruise line will probably have the answer.

The majority of visitors to Peggy's Cove in October will likely be from cruise ships. So I would go early or late, to try and avoid the busses.

I would not wait to rent the car as you should always end your day close to port and there is lots to see and do there.

Here is the port schedule so you can see how many ships will be in town: http://www.cruisehalifax.ca/our-visitors/#october

We change back to Standard Time on November 2 as does the USA.

Well you could go to the Fairview Cemetery and then take a leisurely drive to Peggy's Cove. As long as you don't want to go into the restaurant/gift shop you should be fine. If you are in decent shape, wander around on the rocks away from the others. Many passengers won't.

Then you can get to Ryer's for lunch.

I highly recommend walking about Peggy's Cove on the rocks. We figured we'd stop by for 10 minutes to see the lighthouse but didn't realize how beautiful the shore was wander about in (on the rocks at a safe distance from the water of course). So 10 minutes turned into about an hour and a half.

Having said that, we had time to go to Ryers for lunch (yum) and drove on to Mahone Bay and Lunenburg for about 45 minutes. A bit less time there but it was an easy drive and we are glad we made the trip...Also glad to have spent some extra time at Peggy's Cove.

We made sure we had plenty of time on the tail end and browsed the shops/checked email at the Port on the tail end. We had another stop in Halifax later in the cruise in order to see Halifax itself.

If you rent from Thrifty's (at the Westin) I saw a sign on the desk that they give away the reservation if you are two hours late. We called ahead since disembarkation was taking FOREVER and we wanted to make sure they would keep the car for us. I don't think they open until 8am (local time).
