I concur with Cruiserbruce, rent a car head to Rotorua for two nights and spend three nights in Auckland. Auckland is a great city but I think you will enjoy the thermal wonderland of Rotorua. In regard to accommodation the sky casino grand hotel is a nice property centrally located in Auckland try wotif.co.nz for last minute pricing deals. For Rotorua anything down by the lake is good I think their is a Novotel their from memory

Thank you for your suggestions. I was looking at the Waldorf Stadium Apartment hotel. It's at 40 Beach Street. It seems like a good location. Anybody know about this property?

It's a 10 minute walk east of the city/ports and about a 5 minute walk from the britomart centre good hotel and safe area check trip advisor for updated reviews. My customers stay here as it is a serviced apartment type hotel no complaint from them

We booked thru Air BnB and found a charming place in Ponsonby close to public transit. We are looking forward to being in the community and experiencing it from a pseudo locals point of view.

Try the Waterfront serviced apartments. They're on the dock where you board Solstice (opposite the Hilton) and are fantastic.

I'll second that. We stayed there some years ago and unexpectedly had ringside seats for the start of the next leg of the round the world yacht race. They've changed name, or management company, since I stayed there I think. I was trying to find them a while back and couldn't. Thanks, nijh.
