Sent from my iPhone using Forums Probably not. The Latin countries that are chummy with Russia are Venezuela, Cuba and to some degree Ecuador. Venezuela is in the process of probably throwing out the Socialist government. Cuba will probably do the same one the aging Castro brothers are gone. In any event, main cruise lines do not visit either of those countries.

Your point about main cruise lines not visiting Russia-friendly countries still stands though.

Even though the old Sandinistas have gained some power, they have not co-opted their country by selling out to the drug cartels. In fact, Nicaragua has very, very strict anti-drug smuggling laws. I understand that if drug smugglers are caught, they are executed. Therefore, drug smugglers avoid the country. Not so in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala. Of course, the Castros, Chavez and his lackeys in charge have allied with the drug cartels to help finance their revolutions. It is making much of Central America unsafe for cruising. I think Belize, Panama and Costa Rica are still safe.

One response was that Russian bases will not have an impact on cruises because Russia is most likely to build military installations in Cuba and Venezuela, countries without a large cruise industry. I added Nicaragua to the list of targets for Russian bases. Some think Nicaragua will be the location of the first Russian base. I agree with most everything you said about instability in other parts of Central America due to the drug trade but that wasn't the OP's question.n Edited March 24, 2014 by dr__dawggy

As I stated in my post, I did not see these pro-Russian countries as sustaining their current governments in the long run.
Merlinite Posted March 24, 2014 #10 Share Posted March 24, 2014 there's also talk/plans for a canal through Nicaragua, which was the other choice when Panama was built. Hmmm...

Drug instability is a bigger long range threat than Russian bases in the region.
