Australia Day fireworks

The fireworks are released from multiple barges in the harbour as well as the Harbour Bridge, so there are plenty of vantage points for photography. You might choose a spot where you focus in the Bridge, or a spot where you can see multiple barges. It also depends on your camera gear as to how much detail you'll see, but I suspect the Photography board will help you if needed.

You can sit in a number of spots for free, although the downside is you need to be there hours ahead to get a good spot. The full list of vantage spots from 2013 is at http://www.sydneynewyearseve.com/vantage-points/ with the 2014 spots usually being posted in early November. Last year you could subscribe to be told when the information is available. Mrs Macquarie's Chair is one of the free spots.

There are a couple of paid alternatives I'd like to suggest(I hope all these links work):

1. You can book a spot on Clark Island which is in Sydney Harbour itself. The NSW National Parks Service is running this and details are at http://www.sydney.com/events/island-light-nye-at-clark-island and http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/Whats-On/new-years-eve

2. The Royal Botanic Gardens are offering three different options. For details see http://www.new-years-eve-in-sydney.com/

3. A number of boats and catamarans will be in the harbour and you can buy a place on them. They tend to be expensive (read at least $A300 per person) and people's experience on them tend to vary. Reputable companies include Captain Cook Cruises (http://www.captaincook.com.au/sydney-harbour-cruises/whats-on-in-sydney/new-years-eve/), the James Craig (a tall ship http://buy.shf.org.au/eventBooking2?id=70190000000VBNFAA4), Bass and Flinders (http://newyearsevecruise.com.au/) and Sydney Glass Island (http://www.sydneyglassisland.com.au/new-years-eve-2013) but there are many others. Be careful with the terms if the weather is terrible and the cruise is cancelled as most will give you a rain check for another cruise at a laster date rather than a refund.

Hope this helps.

During our April 1 to 9th stay before our Transpacific, will there be anything going on in Sydney we should see.

There is always lots to see and do in Sydney....there are suggestions throughout the CC Boards... but also have a look here.

Flipper, thank you, our daily plans are pretty well set, I was wondering if there were any celebrations, fesitvals going on the first part of April, the calendar of events appears to show things after we leave. During those 9 days, we are taking a day trip to Jervis bay and the Blue Mountains. We will be picked up at the Meriton Apartments on Pitt Street.

If you google Whats on in Sydney April 2014 it will give you some idea. Looks like you will be there for Youth Week. I dont think that will impact on any of the tourist venues. Your plans sound great and I am sure that Sydney will look afer you well . Being the Hub of the South Pacific its a very vibrant and exciting City.

I mustn't have read the subject properly, as I missed it was Australia Day. Sorry about that. My info was for the New Year's Eve fireworks. I haven't been to the Australia Fireworks in Darling Harbour, so I can't say where is best.

We leave for Sydney from LAX on March 15th, take a 13 day NZ cruise on the ROS, followed that up with 9 days of sightseeing, then reboard for the 18 day Transpacific to Honolulu ending with the 12 day Hawaii to Vancouver. This will be our first visit and have dreamed of visiting Australia & NZ and now have finally made it.:) Our daughter and husbands sister will be joining us for their first cruise or should I say cruises. The daughter is involved with taking her Australian show around the US & into Canada and speaking on the habitats of the Kangaroos, Wallabees etc so this will be a special treat for her.
