Sure, there are lots of international SIM cards that cover many different countries (I am assuming that your cell phone is unlocked and you can use a different SIM). I've purchased from Telestial before and I found they had good service and rates (http://www.telestial.com/international_sim_cards.php), but there are many others online that might suit your needs better. Some offer cheaper calls but more for texts, or some might offer faster shipping to NZ, etc.

We are also from NZ. Our phone provider is Vodafone. With them, you can ask to enable the Roaming function, which will work in Europe. No need to buy a European SIM card.

To cut costs, we switch the phone off as the ship leaves each port, and only switch it on again when we arrive at the next port. That way, we use the on-shore phone provider, not the ship's (expensive) phone service.

We also use mostly text messaging and ask our family to do the same.
