OhioMike2016 Posted April 28, 2016 #1 Share Posted April 28, 2016 Will be in the following ports in April 2017; Nassau, St. Martin/St. Maartin, St. Thomas/St. John. I would like to get off the ship and run on some land. To my fellow runners: How is running in these port (i.e. traffic, road conditions, hills, safety)? Any routes or things that would be good to run? Must see things that I should include in any run? How is the weather in April? Which is the best port to run in (if any)? Thanks
alfaeric Posted April 29, 2016 #2 Share Posted April 29, 2016 It's hot. Always... I really struggle, but run anyway. None of the ports are super duper runner friendly, but you can. In Nassau- we've run to Paradise Island- through town to the bridge- and then various places on Paradise Island. It's ok. You can also run the opposite direction, and once you get to the beach, there's a nice path along the water. This is toward Junkaroo Beach. Last time we did that, we found that a marathon was ending. And we ran the last two runners to the finish! Very cool. St. Thomas is ok to run along the water- but if you are on the Oasis, the start is kind of a pain- it is the walking path for people to get to town. You can also run over to the airport, but the paths are kind of narrow on busy roads. Not tried St Johns, but enjoyed St Croix. St Maarten- not so great. There are paths. But the road from the port to town is pretty busy, and not long. We ran to Fort Amsterdam which is opposite from the cruise ships. It's ok. Hot. Freaking hot. Take water. And cash to get more. (I normally do 6 or so miles, my wife up to 10)
leslieart Posted May 22, 2016 #3 Share Posted May 22, 2016 There is an outfit called Active Island in St. Thomas. They do a nice running tour. I highly recommend it.
peanut head Posted September 26, 2016 #4 Share Posted September 26, 2016 You may want to contact Runner's World magazine/website for more information. I believe they did a story on running clubs in the Caribbean in the past and places to run on some Islands.
