Cornus Posted August 13, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 13, 2014 Wondering what might be the best way to get from Soton>Brighton...train, car service, bus? Suggestions? TIA
John Bull Posted August 13, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 13, 2014 Hi Jack, Let the train take the strain. Direct hourly service, journey time something under 2 hours, about £15 per person http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/planjourney/search No direct Nat Express coach service, it involves going via Gatwick airport - two sides of a triangle. Consequently a lot longer journey than the train, & more expensive. JB :)
Cornus Posted August 13, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted August 13, 2014 Thanks for your response...looks like we'll take the train. Got a quote from the car service company and it was $100+ [that's pounds...I don't have a key for that :)]
Amerryscot Posted August 13, 2014 #4 Share Posted August 13, 2014 According to Travelinesw.com (which covers all options), the only one they recommend is the rail service. It takes 2h15.
aquilegia Posted August 13, 2014 #5 Share Posted August 13, 2014 It's one of those annoying journeys that, because of the route the trains take, is actually considerably longer by train than by car. But the train is certainly the cheapest way.

Got a quote from the car service company and it was $100+ [that's pounds...I don't have a key for that :)] For future reference, Jack, folk who don't have a £ sign use the initials GBP. Some use lbs, which is both amusing & confusing, cos that's pounds weight. Your computer has £ and € and a few other tricks, but they involve using multiple keys. Can't recall how to find them but they're really not worth the bother. JB :)

But the train is certainly the cheapest way. Are you perhaps thinking Southampton to Gatwick? That goes along the coast & then turns north. The Southampton to Brighton route is pretty direct, but most trains on that route stop at about 18 (yes, eighteen !!) stations along the coast, which makes it pretty slow. Some of the route is quite scenic. JB :)
scottbee Posted August 14, 2014 #8 Share Posted August 14, 2014 I'll second the train, once an hour. It's also possible to take the gatwick train, and change half way.
