Cruise Certificates??

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am a NCL newbie :)

Does NCL have Next Cruise Certificates (sorry that is what they are called on RCCL) where I can purchase onboard and use when I know a date and ship I want to book so I can get OBC?

We are sailing on the Sky in May and are thinking of possibly changing our Allure cruise next July 2013 to the Breakaway, which will leave out of NYC. So, I was thinking I can purchase the cruise certificates (we will be booking 4 cabins)..4 of them, and use for our booking for July 2013. Does this make sense?

Thanks.

Here is the information of the freestyle cruise rewards.

If you read the terms and conditions it will give you more information

http://www2.ncl.com/freestyle-cruise/cruise-rewards

The main things are

It can only be purchased while on board at the cruise consultants office/desk

It is only good for 4 years

It can only be used for new bookings

It can be used for a full deposit on any cabin except those listed, which it can then be used as a partial deposit

It is only good for sailings 6 days or longer

It is transferrable but has no cash value

A maximum of 4 may be purcahsed by one person but only one can be used per stateroom.

Yes they do, they cost and have a value of $250 each and you get $100 per certificate to use for OBC on the current cruise. They can be transferred also.

They are good for 4 years and only one certificate can be used per cabin. I just used 2 on 2 cabins on the gem in Dec via my TA.

Can you use the OBC in the casino? I know they now prohibit using the OBC for service charges, but how about the casino?

I have read threads both ways. Since the new accounting system just went in the beginning of January and then their was talk of the corrections to it, I don't think there has been enough feed back yet on how exactly it is working. Most seem to spend their refundable and non-refundable and not have anything left to really speak to that.

You really don't have to worry about spending the $100 OBC in the casino or elsewhere because you've paid $250 for the Freestyle Cruise Reward, so the $100 has already been spent.

We just bought our first ones last September. One $250 for me, one for DH. We just booked another cruise using the DH's certificate. So very easy to do. We used the same TA agency as the last cruise. They brought up our file and all they needed to make sure of was having the DH's lattitude number. Used it for our deposit:D

This week on the GEM when we purchased the Cruise rewards we were also handed a slip where you could get $125 slot credit for the $100 OBC from the cruise reward. I didn't read any of the fine print since we don't play slots...but it sounded like a good deal.

If I remember correctly, it's a coupon for $125 in slot play for the $100 OBC from buying the FCC.

We've purchased Freestyle Cruise Rewards twice before, the last time being in April 2011. Our family of four was in two separate cabins on the Epic. We filled out one order form per cabin to purchased two separate Cruise Rewards. When we went to pick up our certificates, we were handed one letter in my name for the total deposit $500. The Cruise Rewards themselves had no separate identification number, they were linked to my Latitudes number. I asked about it being "lumped" together, but they assured me it would not be an issue. I'm telling you all this because as I tried to book two separate cabins on the Epic for this upcoming April, I was told I could only use one cruise reward, since they both had been processed in my name. It took a few phone transfers and more than an hour, but one credit was transferred into my wife's name and we were able to use both credits, one per cabin.

It was a hassle, not a problem. We will definitely purchase two more this go round, but you can bet I will leave the ship with two separate letters!

That is really weird that they combined your order and put them all under the same Latitude Number. I've bought some and a room mate bought some and they stayed seperate. Was the same CC attached to both cabins? Maybe that had something to do with it.

I usually get them in my name and then transfer to whoever is going to be in additional cabins when I'm ready to book even when I already know we'll be booking multiple cabins on the same ship. (Kids are all adults so they get transferred to them) It's just easier to have them in my account since I do all the booking and the person who's account they are in must give the okay to have them transferred. DH loves cruising - not booking, LOL.

OP - for your question it is important to note that the cruise credit can be used for future bookings only. You cannot apply the credit to an existing reservation.

Thank you very much. I called my TA today and they said that it is not a problem for them to cancel my existing reservation and rebook with the certificates. They do it a lot.

They did tell me, though, that before I sail on Sky, to call them (or I can look myself on NCL) and see if the price of the cabin has gone up since if they cancel and rebook me, it will be at a higher rate. I am thinking about booking tomorrow (Breakaway) to secure the rate and then see prices the day before I leave and decide to gamble that a few days that prices will not go up.

Thank you for this information. I need to ask you what exactly I need to do:

My mother is taking my sister's family and my family on the Breakaway next July 2013. She is paying for the cabins.

She has a Latitudes number (we all do).

She will be booking a total of 4 cabins on the Breakaway. What do you suggest since she wants to purchase 4 FCCs while onboard the Sky for the Breakaway.

Thanks sooo much!

Is your Mom and Sister going on the Sky with you or not? If you are the only one of the three going on the Sky in May then you can just buy them all for your Mom. She'll just need to pay you $150.00 for each one she wants. They will all be in your name and as soon as you get home you can transfer one to your mom and one to your sister and whoever the other cabin is for. It's just a simple phone call. If you will all be on the Sky in May, then you can each get one in your own name and have mom pay $150 towards each OnBoard Account.

Yes, the two cabins were combined on one account so you're probably right! I didn't realize that "transferring" the credits is a common practice. It wasn't difficult, just surprising. I got my confirmations this evening, so it all worked out!

I've bought two from here on CC and had them transferred to me. I've had a friend who was cruising pick one up for me that she transferred to me once she got back. And I've transferred several to my sons when they go along. Our next cruise we will probably pick one up for my son's FIL.

You can even transfer them to someone that has never sailed on NCL yet. They will assign them a Latitude number prior to transferring it. They make great presents too! I sound like I should work for NCL, LOL, but I just love saving money on cruising!

Since we are never sure how many years it will be between vacations I was iffy on the 4 years.

We purchased one on our cruise in Feb, transferred it to friends that were cruising in Oct. They purchased one on their cruise in Oct and transferred it to us making my 4 years from my original purchase actually 4 yrs 8 mos.

Win win situation. I got an extension on the time frame of my original purchase and gained NCL a new loyal customer.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi. Me again. Just making sure I have this all correct:

I plan on purchasing 4 FCC onboard Sky in May to use for our Breakaway trip July 2013.

The FCC is $250. $250 multiplied by 4 is $1000.

I will get $400 OBC but will be paying for the FCC with our Sign/Sail card so the $1000 will be charged to my cabin, thus leaving me with $600 to pay at end of cruise. Is this correct so far?

Then, I am taking the FCC and using them to book 4 cabins on the Breakaway.

Where is the savings for me since I don't care about a reduced deposit since at final payment any remaining balance will still need to be paid.

Why will I pay $600 so I can put $250 down on each cabin on the Breakaway (I will have 4 cabins but 10 people).

Thank you all VERY much!

You don't quite have it correct. Yes, you'll pay $1,000 for the four FCCs and get $400 in onboard credit, so your net cost will be $600. But when you book your next cruise, each of those certificates will still be worth $250 even though they effectively cost you only $150 each.
