Cobh and Ringaskiddy

Recommended Posts

Has anyone docked (or tendered) in Ringaskiddy, which is apparently another dock location close to Cobh? I am trying to figure out if there's any way to get to either Cobh or Cork from there, and so far haven't found anything other than possible taxi service. The port site (portofcork.ie) doesn't give much information for cruisers, and I haven't yet searched for a tourist information office in Ringaskiddy.

If you docked there, was a shuttle provided to Cork or Cobh or anywhere where I could pick up a tour or transportation to Cork? I'm not sure what I'm going to do, as I was thinking we were going to dock at Cobh, which has a railroad line within walking distance to the port.

Sigh - anybody have any experience with Ringaskiddy, Ireland?

Brittany Ferries sail a regular route from France to Ringaskiddy and I believe there is a bus service to Cork which ties in with the ferry arrivals. Whether the schedule would suit your arrival time I don't know, but I imagine your cruise line will provide a shuttle. It's likely this would be to Cork, rather than Cobh.

Thanks. Often the cruise line (Oceania) does provide a shuttle, but in this case, I wasn't sure, as Ringaskiddy to Cork isn't just a 5 minute drive, I don't think. I will try to see if they know if they're going to run a shuttle, and also check on the buses meeting Brittany Ferries.

Ringaskiddy to Cork city will take about 20/30 minutes by shuttle bus (if provided). the regular bus service would take longer because of the stops and pickups on the way. I'm reasonably sure that the cruise line will provide shuttles as Ringaskiddy is quite inaccessable when compared with Cobh and the transport connections do not exist at Ringaskiddy.

Presuming there are shuttles then you have plenty of time to get to Cork and even take the train to Cobh if you want to.

I used live in the area. A potential option if you don't mind some walking would be to get a taxi from Ringaskiddy to Passage West, then travel as a foot passenger on the cross river ferry (not expensive), then walk about 10 minutes to a train station at Carrigaloe which will bring you on into Cobh. The 10 minute walk is on the flat, but it's on a bad footpath on the side of a road. Not particularly scenic!

The normal scheduled Cork/Ringaskiddy bus timetable is here: http://www.buseireann.ie/pdf/1296225746-223.pdf

The bus from Ringaskiddy to Cork will drop you about 3 minutes walk away from the cross river ferry, but it would be less direct than a taxi.

It might be worth contacting Cork Harbour Cruises as well (http://www.corkharbourcruises.ie/tours.php). It's possible if there's a big ship arriving in during off season that they might run a one off tour between Ringaskiddy and Cobh. There's no harm in asking.

While Cobh is quite picturesque, I don't think there's really enough there to do for an entire day. To be honest you'll see the best of it from sea as you pass. The deep water chanel through the harbour to Ringaskiddy gives you a great view of the town from starboard as you're coming in,

By the way, it's highly unlikely that there's a decent tourist office in Ringaskiddy.

Despite the URL, here's a list of the planned 2013 cruise schedule: http://www.portofcork.ie/index.cfm/page/cruiseschedule2010

Here's the Port tourist information links: http://www.portofcork.ie/index.cfm/page/links though from a quick glance, it's a shambles - half the links don't work

If you feel like paying for taxis, two interesting things within half an hour of Ringaskiddy (in different directions) are the Jameson Distillery in Midleton (http://www.jamesonwhiskey.com/en/index.html#visit-us), and Blarney Castle (http://www.blarneycastle.ie/).

In yet another direction, the pretty town of Kinsale (famous for seafood) is also about 30 minutes from Ringaskiddy.

You can get buses from Cork city to all of these, but journey time will be longer as you have to go in to Cork on a local bus, then take another bus onwards. I'd probably allow 90 minutes - 2 hours each way if doing that (though if you're lucky with connections it might not take quite that long).

http://www.journeyplanner.transportforireland.ie/nta/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en might come in useful if you want to use public transport.

hi

i am from cobh and i work next to the ringaskiddy port, ringaskiddy is an industrial port and the area around port is highly industrialised some of the biggest companys in the world are there. if you take thecross river ferry it is 15 mins to cobh by car/taxi

cobh is well worth a visit, a beautiful town with fantatic views and a beautiful cathedral. a great town if you like history ie titanic, lusitania and everything emigration related. lots to see and do and a rail link of 25 mins away from cork city.

a taxi from ringaskiddy to cobh is a good idea, all you need is the weather and that is a lucky dip!!!!!

i hope you visit my beautiful hometown and i hope you have a fantastic cruise and i hope youlove ireland as much as i do.

Thanks, Rob. I am beginning to think I will need 2 rain jackets, 6 caps and 4 umbrellas for that weather in the British (and Norwegian) Isles, but rain or not, I intend to see things while there besides the inside of a cruise ship!

Rob or anyone: I assume it's not advisable or possible to walk through the port to the cross-island ferry, right? Does anyone have a guess as to how much a taxi would cost? Really, for that matter, does anyone have a guess as to how much a cab would cost to either Cork or Kinsale?

I am still up in the air as to what to do while in the Ringaskiddy area. I think I will pass on the Blarney Stone as I'm not so crazy about things that others consider "must dos" and am considering Cork and Kinsale, but open to other possibilities.

If a Dublin jackeen may offer advice on Cork matters, you could try the Transport for Ireland taxi fare calculator tool. I do not know how reliable it is. Perhaps a Corkonian could guide you on this.

Rob: My plan for the day was to walk off the ship and spend our allotted time right in Cobh. Now it turns out we are docking in Ringaskiddy. We will be in port on a Sunday. Will there be taxis around to take us into Cobh? Is it better to take the ferry and then a taxi into the center of town?

Thanks,

Mairlyn

I'm not Rob, but did a little taxi fare checking last night (Ringaskiddy port to Kinsale, Cork, and Cobh) using the site provided above. To Cobh it stated a fare for 2 people of 47 to 61 euros. It is quite a loop around the water!

That's why I was suggesting getting the cross river ferry in an earlier post - it's a long drive all the way around the harbour. Taking the ferry takes nearly 30km (17 miles) off the trip. I just called a Cork taxi firm (http://www.corktaxi.ie/) and asked for a rough estimate - they reckon a taxi from Ringaskiddy to Cobh via the ferry would probably be about €25, BUT (and it's a big but), it really depends on how long you're waiting for the ferry.

The ferry just goes backwards and forwards all day - there's no set times for it. Sometimes you might have to wait quite a while as a ship goes up the channel to Cork (the ferry has to give way to larger traffic). In Irish taxis both miles and waiting time are metered, so while you're sitting on the dockside waiting for the ferry, the meter is ticking up. That's why, if I was doing the trip, I'd get a taxi as far as the ferry, go on as a foot passenger, then walk the 10 minutes to the train station.

I don't have any affiliation with that taxi company, btw, they're just one I happen to use when I'm in Cork, and their number was in my phone.

Thanks, that's very helpful. I tried to look up the ferry, and it mentioned it started at 7 AM but didn't give the times it ran (or price), so I figured it was probably on an irregular schedule. It's good to know it's not too terribly far a walk from the ferry to a train station (Carrigaloe), as that opens up more possibilities for me. I was looking at the distance to walk from Carrigaloe to the Cobh waterfront, and it looked much too far to walk, but I hadn't thought about the possibility of a train from there, just a cab.

At this point I'm leaning towards a day (or good half day) in Kinsale, but will continue exploring possibilities, and continue to check this post if anything new comes up! Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions.
