Rare CruiserFromSC Posted August 13, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 13, 2014 First time cruiser on PG leaving September 27th. Could some of you frequent repeat cruisers give some advice to a newbie on whether it is better to carry local currency vs dollars? Normally, we would use our credit card, but we were wondering for incidentals whether it would be better to carry some cash and which currency. Thank you! :)
Wendy The Wanderer Posted August 13, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 13, 2014 We always get some francs, for use at small craft markets and places like that. Near the dock in Bora Bora for example there's a large craft market. Many places now take credit cards, although beware you may need chip and pin. Emdee Posted August 13, 2014 #3 Share Posted August 13, 2014 I would buy some francs. Maybe 200 $ worth ie Not a whole lot but do take USD cash as you can change very reasonably on board the ship. You will usually get a better rate if you use the local currency but sometimes it makes sense to just pay in USD. We usually pay in both currencies whichever makes sense at the time. Most operators in the Motu Mahana stalls will take USD and will also take Credit cards. As Wendy says some want a card with a PIN #. If you are staying at the IC pre cruise they do have an ATM there as well. There is also an ATM at the airport. I cannot speak for ATMs in the islands as they may not be conveniently located. twin123185 Posted August 15, 2014 #4 Share Posted August 15, 2014 Don't forget that the ship will have the best exchange rate. But yes carry some for when you get off plane or use ATM at airport Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app
