Where to stay in Copenhagen?

I'll be flying into Copenhagen a few days earlier before my cruise so I'm looking for a place to stay, either a hotel or on AirBnB.

But, what's a good area or neighborhood to narrow my search for a place in Copenhagen? Since I'll need to go to the cruise afterwards, I'm assuming this would change my search compared to another visitor or tourist- I'll need a place that's convenient to reach from the airport, close to the tourist attractions, and then convenient to reach the port for the cruise.

Is the Vesterbero district by the main train station the best area for my purposes? But, how concerned should I be that area is Copenhagen's red light district and that I've read that area is 'seedy'? Will it be safe to walk back to a hotel in that area at night?

Generally I would say its safe, the only things thats gonna be a problem is your comfort zone, meaning you will probably see something you won't see elsewhere.

Porn shops, strip clubs, perhaps a street hooker etc but that's only if you walk down Istedgade.

If you choose a hotel at lets say Helgolandsgade or Vesterbrogade you can avoid Istergade entirely because you just walk down Vesterbrogade when coming the town hall square or Tivoli.

How many people are in your group? We wound up renting 2 Airbnbs in the same building - they are called CPH1 & CPH2. The host is named Mark.

We are 10 adults and they are both 2 bedrooms - one bedroom has a double bed & bunk bed (sleeps 4) and the other bedroom has 2 bunk beds (4 beds total.)

The hotel's address is Istedgade 6 so Istedgade will be unavoidable.

Do you have any suggestions for any neighborhoods I might want to check out too?

I saw some interesting houseboats on the Christianshavn kanals and places by Nyhavan, but I don't know if they would work.

When I'm looking for a place, should I only be looking for places that are close to the S-train Norreport, Vesteroport, and Kobenhavn H stops? And, the metro stops won't be really useful for a tourist like me, right?

There's a slew of places for rent on Airbnb in the Indre By neighborhood, but should I avoid those too because they aren't close to a S stop?

Its in the start of Istedgade so it shouldn´t be so bad.

You can change between metro and S-train at Nørreport so a location near any station is good but the bus system is also very good.

I am just beginning my search for 1 night precruise. We will be flying into Copenhagen May 22 and cruising out May 23. We are budget minded...saving our money for excursions. We just want a clean, safe bed in the most convenient area.

What would be your recommendation?

We stayed in Hotel Amager. I think it's only a 2-star hotel, but it was clean and comfortable, and only a couple of blocks from Amagerbro metro station. It was also about half the price of anything else that I found in the area (that wasn't a hostel or a dive).

What about the AC Hotel by Marriott Bella Sky or Quality Airport Hotel? Would it make sense to stay near the airport & take the train to town? And how would we get to the cruise port?

What about the Cabinn Metro? I know it is very basic. But I know nothing about its' location.

If you want to stay closer to central Copenhagen then one of these budget hotels are okay.

Cabinn City - behind Tivoli.

Cabinn Express - a hotel on Frederiksberg that is just open 6 months a year.

Cabinn Metro - located out in Ørestad but train will take you to the central station in 5 minutes or so and metro to Kongens Nytorv in 10 minutes time

Wake Up Tivoli Congress Center - a little bit off center but the bus take you into downtown in 3-5 minutes.

Wake Up Borgergade - located just behind Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn, you almost just step out of the hotel and you are there.

I almost forgot these two.

Cabinn Scandinavia - as Express its located on Frederiksberg but by the lakes so its almost in downtown Copenhagen, 15 minutes or so on foot and you are at the town hall square.

Zleep hotel Copenhagen City - just behind the central station but located near a so called red light district.

Danish Viking, you are such an enormous help! Of those budget hotels listed, which can be most easily reached by train from the airport? And also to the port? Thank you in advance!

Cabinn City, Wake Up Tivoli Congress Center and Zleep Hotel Copenhagen City are in walking from the central station which have trains for both the airport and Østerport where the cruise shuttles departs from.

The same can be said about Cabinn Metro but instead of the central station its just Ørestad station instead.

We stayed at the Scandic Front which is near trendy Nyhavn. Nice rooms, excellent included buffet breakfast, great location. It was a wonderful home base for us in Copenhagen.

If you wait till the last minute, you'll find better deals from hotels that haven't filled up but you also run the risk that there might not be any rooms available.

I ran into that same issue you did when I tried to book a hotel room in mid May- all the affordable hotels I was looking at that were in a central, convenient location were already booked.

I didn't know if it meant that there wouldn't be a lot of rooms available in May or if it was just the cheap, central ones that were already booked up for May.

So I ended up booking at a hotel that was much more expensive than the cheaper options I had looking at even with the discount the hotel was offering. Even though it wasn't a bargain, I still felt pressure to get that room because there was only one or two rooms left at that hotel at that discounted price or else find another place.

In fact, there was still a central, affordable hotel still available according to one of those obscure third party websites I never heard of before but the hotel's website claimed there was no available rooms on that date.

I was afraid that if I reserved that room, I would find out later that there were really no available rooms while the more expensive hotel with that discount got booked while I waited for the cheaper hotel reservation.

There's also airbnb but the available places weren't that cheap either, although you won't have to pay the hotel taxes that will tack on another 20-30 dollars to the bill each night.

Well the one thing you could do is to enjoy Copenhagen and Denmark while you are here then I'm happy.

I'm a little bit unsure about your last part, every price that you see for any hotel should include any taxes, if you have found a place that doesn't have it included please tell me and I will sure look into it.

I was talking about how if you find a place on Airbnb, then you wouldn't have to pay the same hotel taxes on a Airbnb rental as you would have to do if you stayed in a hotel.

The hotel tax issue is something critics of Airbnb like to harp on, even though they dislike it for other reasons, ie they blame Airbnb for the lack of affordable housing.

What area is considered to be the center of Copenhagen?

When I was looking through Airbnb, a lot of places claimed their rental was in the center even though they were all over the map.

If you look at a map of Copenhagen you will find indre By (inner city/downtown area) between the harbour and the lakes in the east west direction and the Kastellet fortress and Kalvebod Brygge in the north south direction.

I feel I should amend my earlier statement and strike out the Vesteroport location even though that was the one I ended up choosing. I had chosen Vesteroport because I was looking for a place that was near a stop to minimize my time walking with luggage.

But, I just discovered the rome2rio website and its suggesting that to get to my hotel near Vesteroport stop that I should go to either Kobenhaven H stop and walk to my hotel or go to the Norreport stop and walk to my hotel.

I would not walk from Nørreport, I would then take one of the many Busses that goes between Nørreport and Rådhuspladsen (city hall square).

Walking from København H (central station) is not so long either.

The problem with Vesterport is that its only the S-train that stops there so you have to change train at København H or Nørreport to reach Vesterport.

I'm looking to stay 3 or 4 days in Copenhagen before my cruise in May 2016. One of the hotels I was looking at is the Square. Can anyone recommend it? There are several different room choices: superior, executive with business lounge or Jr Suite. Anyone stayed in these rooms?

Any other hotels in the center of town do you recommend?

Nimb Hotel (#2), Hotel Alexandra (#15), Marriott (#19) Scandic Palace (#21), Radisson Blu Royal#27) and SP34 (#33) is better rated on tripadvisor.

The square comes in at 34 out of Copenhagens 116 hotels.

There are many other hotels rated higher on the list but they are located in other parts of the downtown area.

Generally we have 8 areas when talking about hotels.

Kongens Nytorv/Nyhavn

Nørreport/Indre Nørrebro

Rådhuspladsen/Tivoli

Vesterbro (generally only a few blocks west of the central station)

Kalvebod Brygge

Ørestad Business district

Frederiksberg

Airport

Then we have some hotels located around the city.

We're staying at the Savoy. Moderately priced for hotels in the area. I hope its centrally located and in a good area. It had good reviews on tripadvisor.

Anyone have any information on the Savoy?
