Just Back From Voyager 6/4/04

Recommended Posts

Hello One and All,

Just got back from the Voyager. I am a 22 year old and sailed with my other friend who is 22.

Let me just start out by saying that this was my twelth cruise and by far one of the best!

All of the drama you may have heard about embarkation and disembarkation were few and far between. We arrived at the port around 12 noon and did not meet any type of lines to get the SeaPass. Once we got our SeaPass we had to wait about 30 min to get a bus to board the ship, but once on we had our stateroom all ready and lunch was being served.

Our Stateroom was an inside cabin (Hey we are two recent college graduates, we had to go cheap). It slept very well, we didnt bump into eachother at all. Cabin Steward was Great. Only downfall was lack of a sun to wake our lazy bums up in the morning.

The layout of the ship was incredible. For a ship so big it was very easy to find your way around the ship. Of course though the only way to get to the showlounge from dinner was by either walking through the casino or "shopping mall." The La Scala theater was really the only place that I felt unsatisfied with, only because ive been on other ships and have seen their layout. This theater only has individual seats, one row behind the other, with cup holder that arnt big enough to even hold a cup. There are no little tables around or even couches, and not much leg room. I guess with a ship so large, you need to cram in the guests.

Johnny Rockets was great!! There is NO charge (to clear that up for anyone wondering), except for beverages (soda, milk shake, malt, etc). The burgers were very good, plus they had other dining options. A very nice touch that RCI did w/ this restuarant was at night, for 2 hours, it was designated for children only, as parents could drop them off for dinner with cruise staff, they could eat with their friends, and not have to worry about those "boring and yucky" dining room food options. You must get to JR and have an extra plate of onion rings with ranch dipping sauce for me!!

The pools were very nice, and what was very cool (at least it seemed for my age group) was that a pool and jacuzzi were open 24 hours. Pool is a Pool, and this post is kinda long already.

One last thing i must talk about is the promenade cafe. Here is were you can get FREE pizza, cookies, and little deli type sanwhiches until about 3am every day. Don't be fooled, its all FREE. (Located on deck 5)

I will write again later about the ports of call, and can answer any questions about ths ship layout or shows at night. (One last thing, Be sure to catch the Ice Show and Quest in Studio B)

If anyone wants to hide me in their luggage for the next one, just give me the word...

Howie,

Thanks for such a positive review, we leave 2 weeks from today!

I am impressed that this was your 12th cruise at 22 years! I am taking my first, and it took 37 years to get there! However maybe my children will be able to claim the same as you, since I understand we will be forever hooked after the first! icon_wink.gif

My husband will be happy to eat many onion rings and ranch for you, dont worry about that!

Thanks again for your review! It's only what you make of it, and sounds like you made a great vacation there icon_smile.gif We have every intention of doing the same!

Hi, My boyfriend and I just got back from this itinerary also. We are both 31. I warn you this will be pretty detailed and long.

We left Albany, NY at 8:15am and arrived in Bayonne around 11am. Got directions off of Mapquest. They were pretty good. Once off of Route 440 you turn onto a road at Cape Liberty that leads to the terminal. Once at the terminal, you have to go bye quite a few old buildings and then drive around the last building to unload your luggage.(was kinda messed up there,as people getting off of the ship were in the same area, trying to wait for someone to pick them up.) Be patient there, they have attendants telling you where to park, and unload your luggage. I waited with the luggage, while my boyfriend parked the car. I think it was around $108 to park the car there, for the whole week. Anyways, once into the terminal building you had to wait in line to get your SeaPass card. They also gave you a # for a bus that would take you to the ship. Didn't take long at all. Next you had to walk to the right and then left, to get your photo taken for your Seapass card.(Take off sunglasses, hats, etc.) Then as you walked straight what do you know, the 1st photo was to be taken. Smile pretty. They had 2 different backgrounds depending on what you liked. Later on that night they are available to purchase.(We bought lots of the photos they took, expensive but lasting memories). Anyways, there were quite a few chairs to sit at while you waited. They had cookies of some sort and a drink of some sort, but didnt try any. They had bathrooms there. I think it was around noonish, when they started to call the first #'s for the bus. Short ride to the ship, I would not recommend walking this. With luggage it might be kinda a pain. Ah, finally we see the Voyager of the Seas. Wow, what a sight, this ship is HUGE!!!! We walked on board to start our vacation. However, we could not go to our rooms until around 2 or 2:30pm. So we just walked around the ship in amazement. Finally we got to put our bags in our room. Then we went to the Windjammer/Island Grill to eat lunch. Food was okay, some of it tasted kinda like it came out of a cardboard box. I guess we are just picky when it comes to the food. However, we did eat here for almost all of our meals. Explore the ship some more, before the Mustering Drill, which took place around 4:30pm. Quite interesting to see everyone in lifejackets. Next at about 5:00pmish the ship was ready to set sail for Labadee. They played some music and had a sailaway party at poolside. Now let the party begin!!! icon_biggrin.gif You can see the Statue of Liberty however you don't go bye it. You do go under the Verazzo Bridge though. Next thing we know it was dinner time. We had 1st seating which was at 6pm. Casual night. Followed by the Welcome aboard show. At 10:45pm was the 1st Bon Voyage parade. Get there early if you want to take photos and video tape it. They rope it off so you don't get in the parade's way. Anyways, that was the 1st day. Oh yeah, Make sure you reserve your shore excursions, so you get the shore excursion you want. Go to the Explorations desk, on deck 5 or order them on the RCTV. We slept really good, no problems with the motion of the ship, however some were wearing patches behind their ears.

Okay to make this review not any longer than possible I will give you the cruise highlights for the week. I have all the Cruise Compass papers if you want them, I will take a photo of them and send it to you.

Once back into town we went to the Island Village and went to Margaritaville-Great party place!!! Don't get to drunk it quick a walk to the ship!!!LOL

Wednesday: Georgetown,Grand Cayman Casual

Tendered into shore wait in line for shore excursion at terminal-listen or you might not hear yours being called. We went on the bike tour-tiring but good workout. Went to Turtle Farm-yes you can hold a Turtle. Then went to town of Hell-Send a postcard postmarked from Hell. Good laugh for family and friends at home. When they read you've been to Hell and Back. Lots of shopping but expensive there.

Went to Port Lucaya for shopping-most stores have the same thing. 3-t-shirts for $10 whata bargain!!!

Saturday:At sea-Smart Casual

Kinda not much to do except relax by the pool,my boyfriend went to the Casino or Arcade while I layed in the sun. He likes to play BlackJack-he did alright.

Don't miss the Farewell show-very good.

Sunday:arrive Cape Liberty icon_frown.gifearly at that, we weren't suppose to arrive till 12 noon but was going under the Verazzo Bridge around 9:45amish.

Very long wait to get off the ship. Make sure you eat breakfast or you might be hungry by the time you get off the ship. We got to stay in our room until 12noon then we had to wait in the La Scala room. The night before you had to put colored coded tags on you luggage, and put any huge luggage bags outside you cabin door before midnight. We had grey so we couldn't get off the ship until 2:15pm. How boring, they had CNN on a 2 large screens. Who wants to hear depressing news while you wait to get off the ship. Your already depressed your time has come to get off the ship. Well off the ship and back onto the bus to go to the terminal to get our luggage. They had huge signs hanging from the ceiling so you are sure to find your luggage farely easy. (We put streamer paper on ours to find it easier). Have passport and your duty paper in hand to hand to the officer. Out the door and ready to head back to the car that will bring us back to the Albany, NY area. Got home around 5:32pm. Time to book next years trip!!! I took loads of photo's like 310 with my digital camera. I don't know how to load them on here though. But if anyone wants to see what an Awesome time you will have, email us at dsnyde2@nycap.rr.com

Get out there-Have fun on your cruise!!!

Any questions, I'll try to answer.

Long review I know but hope this helps all of you out!!!

"However, we could not go to our rooms until around 2 or 2:30pm. So we just walked around the ship in amazement. "

Maybe it was the 'youngin' in me, but once we got on the ship, we totally ignored that whole dont go to your room thing and walked right on over, dropped off the bags and went to lunch. That 2:30 was just suggested, so i say swing by your room to see if you can go in, worst that can happen is you have to keep your luggage.

In reality disembarkation is always gonna be rough just because you know u have to leave the ship, but not having to get out of your stateroom until noon was a very nice change of pace. I just chilled up by poolside with luggage, and once the color before mine was called, made my way down closer to the gangway. From what i could tell, they were calling colors every 20-30 min apart.

I had no problems getting off the ship. Received Yellow Luggage tags which said we would not get off until 2:45, but actually got called around 1:45. I really cant complain at all about disembarkation, only suggestion i would give is if you're getting picked up, it might be easier to call whomever once ur color tag gets called and then tell them to be there about 45min to an hour later.

Cruisephanatic - I usually dont enjoy the dining room service every night, but i believe i had steak 6 out of the 9 nights (plus 1 night of cheese ravioli, chicken marsala, and lobster.) My suggestion for a Portofinos night would be when we are in Jamaica, which i believe is Tuesday night. The only dinner menu item i can remember is jerk chicken, i think i did the every night steak that night. (As well, if you were not aware, there is an every night menu they offer which includes ceasar salad, pasta, steak, chicken breast and salmon).

Don't want to make another long post, so ill give a nice and quick sum up of the ports of call and my take

Labadee - Very Beautiful. A plain and simple Beach day. I went on the Jet Ski's. GREAT TIME, worth every penny. They also have a little water park now - $15 for the day, didnt do it but looked nice.

Ocho Rios - Took a boat tour over to the falls. Had a Great Time. Offered drugs numerous times, you know the deal.

Once back by the ship walked over to the Island Village and MargaritaVille. Very Nice and Very Safe...security/cops all over the place. Also FYI - local tourist place goin up to the village, can make calls for $1/min

Grand Cayman - Word of advice, read your tour tickets carefully, we missed our's!! RCI let us pick any other tour we wanted to replace, so went to stingray city, turtle farm, and HELL. If you do stringray city, you have to book a snorkeling tour. For non swimmers, you can glass bottom observe it. Turtle farm was nice, 10 min deal. Town of Hell was very cool, weird rocks, also a 10 min deal.

Bahamas - Took a taxi to Port Lacaya beach, $5/person. Beach was on actual hotel property, so they wanted $20 to rent a chair. So i decided to be a youngin and just sit by the hotel's pools and enjoy those for free (Although there was a sign that said for guests only, no one bothered me)

Overall Loved Every Port!!

Hello, again. icon_biggrin.gif We were wondering what night Lobster night was? We did not see it on any of the menu's. Oh,well guess we missed out on that. Plenty of restarants around Albany, NY to get seafood.

I just wanted to add that if you want to lay in the sun,at the pool deck. Get your towels from your room steward the night before. If you want a lounge chair, you better get up with the sun, those chair hogs are up bright and early and put their stuff on the chairs. I found this to be quite annoying. The majority of chairs that had things on them, noone even sat in them for hours later. If you don't see anyone in them for along time, just tell the pool attendants, they usually will remove the towels. However, if they had other things on them, your otta luck they don't take them off. Pool area got full quickly on sea days. For those of you who like to drink, they do have 2 "Sky Bars" Other wise you can order a drink from the bartenders walking around. Beware a 15 % gratuity is added to everything you drink. Drink of the days were:

Day 1: Rum Punch for $4.25 or in a souvenir glass for $5.95.

Purchase a unlimited soda fountain card for-guests 17 and under $41.40 including gratuity. All other guests-$62.10 including gratuity. (We packed our own soda and bottled water, no problem to bring it on in a carry on bag).

Day 2: Drink a Sea Breeze for $5.95 and keep the glass.

Day 3: Drink a Tequila Sunrise for $5.95 and keep the glass.

Day 4: Drink a Blue Monday for $5.95 and keep the glass.

Day 5: Jamaican Dream for $5.95 and keep the glass.

Day 6: Drink a Bahama Mama for $5.95 and keep the glass.

Day 7: Caribbean Cooler for $5.95 and keep the glass.

Day 8: Goombay Smash for $5.95 and keep the glass.

Day 9: Long Island Ice Tea $5.95 and keep the glass.

I only had 1 drink a Strawberry/Banana Daquiri in the La Scala lounge and it was $5.46 and that was not in a souvenir glass. Prices are expensive.

If you decide to buy the photos they take, be warn they cost alot. From $9.95 and up.

Well thats it for now. Any other questions feel free to ask. I have to start planning for next year!!! icon_biggrin.gif

Hey everyone. I was on the first 9 day Voyager sailing out of Bayonne on May 21st so I figured I would pop in here and answer a couple of the questions that were posted if I can.

Cruisephanatic - My family did Portofinos on the first night. I know that a lot of people like to meet their table mates in the dining room on the first night and we were thinking the same thing. My tip would be to go to the dining room sometime in the afternoon once you are on the ship and check your table assignment. It is written on the bottom of your seapass card. We did this and realized that the 4 of us in our family were at our own table so there was no need to go to the dining room the first night since we didn't have any dinner mates to meet. Portofinos was very empty on the first night since most people are going to the dining room and we got EXCELLENT service. Just picture 5 or 6 waiters waiting on us for the entire meal!! Normally the service is supposed to be excellent here but since the restaurant only had 3 other tables of people they waited on us hand and foot. They also brought us extras of many of the food items to try even though we didn't ask for them!! The filet mignong was SO GOOD and you could cut it with a butter knife! Whatever night you go I am sure you will love it.

Sealegs9 - You deffinitely don't want to miss lobster night! One tip here would be that if you think you are going to want more than one lobster tail to order it when you first place your order. My brother did this and our waitress brought out 2 lobster tails for him and served him the first one and then when he was done she served him the second one. I didn't do this and ordered my second lobster tail after i was done my first one and it took awhile to get it and it was a little cold.

Smile0808 - I do believe the second formal night was on Thursday. The theme nights weren't very popular except for Caribbean night. That night I saw a lot of people wearing hawaiin print shirts and dresses. On 50s/60s night I saw some of the younger teenagers wearing 50s style clothes but that was about it.

I agree with Cruise4dave&patti about the chair hogs. We usually went up to the pool around 9:30 or so and never had a problem finding a group of 4 chairs especially on the upper deck (one with the jogging track). The lower pool deck area by the pools tends to get full quicker. The drink of the day specials were great and a tip that we unfortunately didn't realize until a couple days into the cruise is that when you order the drink of the day ask for it in a regular glass and it will be cheaper. The first drink of the day I ordered was the rum punch on the first day and I got it in the souvenir glass. Then I ordered the drink of the day the next 2 days and never stated that I wanted it in the souvenir glass but was automatically given the drink in the souvenir glass and charged the $5.95 for it. The souvenir glasses are the same every day so it was pointless to keep getting them so I finally realized that you can order the drink of the day in a regular glass and it is a lot cheaper.

Well hopefully that helps some of you guys out. Ask any other questions and I'll check back to see if I can help.

Great Reviews, thanks... When you ate at Portofinos the first night with just a few tables, how long should you allow for the meal. I do not want to miss the first parade or show.

Hi...I am going on the Voyager 9 night in July. Are the chair hogs also at the solarium pool or only the outside pool?

Thanks for taking the time to answer so many questions. I know that those of us waiting to cruise really appreciate it.

i was also on this cruise i think rccl has many things to work on, getting on the ship was not bad. we had an owners suite. there was a sign for crown and anchor and for suites but we were told to wait in the line no big deal. but it really seemed that know one had a clue to what they were doing.the ship it self is very nice but for the size of the room and the price we paid very disapointed in the room.the food is no better then eating at wall mart icon_eek.giflets get real the quality is very poor. it was almost laughable when they brought our plates to the table we would just look at each other and crack up icon_biggrin.gif wait untill you see the shrimp cocktail icon_eek.gif i seen bigger shrimp in a salad. the food thing has to be addressed. and don't tell me your head waiter (ali) was looking like he hated all americans. and the pool thing needs to be delt with also. i am an early riser i would be walking the track around 7am and you would see people laying what ever they had on the chairs only to come back hours later. i thought that was so rude and only seen one pool attendent that was only picking cups off the floor. some people would have a set of chairs in the sun and a set in the shade icon_mad.gifand what happend to the music on the pool deck you could hardly hear it and most of the times it was never on.and don't get hungry if your at the pool there is no were to get anything if you want a hot dog or hamburger you have to go inside and then you lost that chair you fought for.like i said for the money we spent we could have done disney cruise again they are so much better run then rccl. we had a conceirge on rccl that was so totally inept he could not be found at all. waldo is easier to spot.when we did find him after leaving many messages on his voice mail to which he never returned a single call. we needed 2 things from him a converter for the plugs so my wife could use her nebulizer he said he would take care of it 5hrs later a girl knocks on the door and says sorry they have no converters icon_confused.gifwould you like to bring your neb down to the first deck there is a plug there--*****. 9500.00 for this . a garbage owners suite to boot.the 2nd thing we asked him for was some info on the islands like which beach was nice. he could not help with that because he didn't know about the islands can you belive. we couldn't.the islands were nice but i would skip jamaca if i had the choice. to sum up this cruise i would say rccl is about making money and thats it.i have only been on a disney cruise before but they will stand on ther head to make sure everything is right. rccl should take a lesson in this.

Too bad your vacation was soooooooo horrible - maybe you need to find a different sort of vacation in the future.

I knew it was too good to be true when all the posts on this thread were positive . . . always has to be someone who bashes!

Tony22, just 1 question. What type of adapter did you need for the nebulizer? Being from NY your device should be standard 110. Every plug I've seen on RCI was 110. Now I haven't been on the Voyager, maybe their's are different?
