Bamboo Restaurant on the Dawn

Thanks for the word! Just scratched Bamboo off my list. Tell us how the money flowed in the casino...Machines or table.

We liked it, but then again we are big asian food eaters. In fact, we had something made that was not on the menu (without any problems). We plan to eat there again next month.

We were not impressed. Small portions and not at all good quality food. We prefered Cagneys and Salsa.

We ate at the suchie bar twice. Not a lot of variety, but the chef did make us special tuna and salmon wraps when we asked for something special. We got tired of the new menus in the included resturants, and found this a good choice. Not much selection, just the tried and true rolls.

The food at Bamboo wasn't awful. But I don't think it was worth the extra charge. We tried it a second time. Not any better than the first. If you're a big fan of Asian food, you're likely to be disappointed. Most Asian cusine tends to taste fresh and have lots of contrasting flavors. Bamboo didn't. It looked good but the flavors just weren't there. Spend the money at Le Bistro instead.

That confirms it for me. I am not a lover of far eastern foods so my vote may not count for much. I have passed up on it before on other voyages on the Dawn. I look forward to Cagneys, impressions and late nights at Blue Lagoon. What about you, Andrew?

You know Eileen, I'm a little reticent but I promised myself that if I ever sailed the Dawn again, I would do everything I intended to do last time but didn't(ie Cagneys,Bimini and Bamboo)...I'll definitely try the sushi and teppanyaki...I won't scratch off the idea of Bamboo yet..if we do I'll have them send a doggy bag to your cabin! ;)

Does Bamboo still run the 1/2 price special for the 5:00 dinner? We did that and liked it. More attentive service than in main dining.

OH hi..it's Tink again ... I love Japanese food ... didn't do Bamboo but did Teppanyaki and wouldn't do it again .. did sushi twice and loved it (because you could ask the chef to do something other than the standard supermarket california rolls). Our teppanyaki experience included a screaming 2 year old who threw rice and chopsticks all over the place.

Just came home today. Had dinner last night in the Bamboo Restaurant. It was about on par with the other upscale restaurants on board - TERRIBLE.

1. The staff was not friendly at all. Upset that we didn't want to order a BOTTLE of wine.

2. The food was served randomly - I got my appetizer and my husband had to wait for his.

3. I had a Chicken/Pea Pod dish that was very good. The Beef/Brocoli dish was awful looking and tasting.

4. The fried rice - the worst I've ever had.

5. My husband (a "Give it to Mikey" kind of guy, eats anything) had Peking Duck - Not very good but did finish it.

6. He also had the Lamb dish - did not finish. Really bad.

7. He also did not eat his fried rice.

8. Ordered the surcharge Sushi/Sashmi - Enjoyed but had better.

Didn't bother having desert.

We unfortunately felt that this ship had the worse food (especially the buffet)of the 5 cruises we've been on. We ate in all restaurants except the Japanese. Reminded us of leftovers that were microwaved. Practically same menu in each restaurant. Wait staff in all restaurants not very professional at all. Could it be because the gratuties are added to your bill instead of being handed out at the end of the trip? We were on Carnival last Thanksgiving and did not encounter any of this with the waiters then.

We don't even like Banboo's menu:(

We had the best experience at Bamboo. In fact we went there for lunch one day, my husband stayed at the sushi counter & I ate at the teppenyaki table (joined another family), and the management felt bad that I was sitting with strangers, that they comped all my drinks. I had 2 strawberry daq's & 1 coke. Plus the food was AWESOME-SO MUCH TO EAT!!!!!! The filet mignon was like butter. I give it a great review:D

Teppenyaki was good, sushi bar was ok. Bamboo, the main part of the sit-down restaurant, not so good. I really think of them as three different dining venues.

The chicken wonton salad was excellent. Very tiny. Order 10 of them.

Besides that, wellllll........order the chicken salad.:D

Very true...it is 3 different venues. The sushi was okay, on par with what you can buy prepared at the supermarket. Teppenyaki was very good but we missed it last trip. They made the best rice I have ever had at similar restaurants and the dipping sauces were good.

Bamboo ..They have a great tuna steak .I think I maybe the only one who likes it because as hard as it is to get a resevations at the other restaurants you can always just walk up and dine in Bamboo.. never crowded.

I'm confused then..how does the pricing work...don't you have to pay $15 and you're allowed a maximum of 2 or 3 dishes???

I'm not sure how it works. I do believe it was 3 selections. Frankly, depending on what you ordered, a grown man could leave hungry. This was the case at our table anyway.

IMO if you pay an extra charge, I can't see the staff telling you you can't have more if it is reasonable. (I have this mental image of that classic book and the boy holding up his empty bowl "May I have more,please?":D )

Just got back from the 3/16 -26 Dawn sailing. We tried all the main dining rooms and all the specialty restaurants, except La Tratorria. Le Bistro had a breathtaking environment, B+ food, was pretentious (the un, deux, trois revealing of the main courses was corny). Cagneys had excellent steak, good crab cakes (high praise from a Mrayland crab girl), service was superb. In Bamboo we tried the Teppanyaki -- very good, but smokey one evening -- and the main area. It was fabulous with outstanding service (Jerome and Mao were attentive and helpful; Nestor entertained us with napkin folding and toothpick games). Everyone gets dim sun, soup and a choice of salad (the chinese chicken salad is awesome; I asked for the dressing recipe so I can duplicate it at home!). Then you get to choose two entres -- I cannot imagine anyone going home hungry. We didn't have room for dessert. (my daughter thought the broccoli beef was great, we all loved the teriyaki salmon). The sushi bar would make pretty much whatever you wanted to try and the range of sake available was excellent. Salsas was a disaster -- food was great, but the room was understaffed; after an hour and 45 minutes we finally finished our entres and didn't even consider dessert because we couldn't imagine waiting for it. The food in the main dining rooms was ordinary to good; the service was below average to outstanding.
