I am banking on seeing what happens as restaurants, etc open to determine the probability of my January cruise happening. I am amazed at the people that keep moving their cruises to the soonest possible date for when they resume. There were people that had their March cruises cancelled that moved their cruise to my April cruise, then got cancelled, and moved again to June, July, and then August. Amazing. All I can figure is that they are of the younger generations that are not taking this pandemic as seriously as us older folks. But as much as my hubby and I have been in lockdown here, relying totally on a grocery pick up service, we have begun to venture out. Masked up and with hand sanitizer. I totally agree that society cannot take this shut down any longer. Losing one’s lively hood could be just as deadly to a family as contracting the virus. People need to work, and having your government keep sending checks is NOT the answer. That needs to stop. We need to start building our economy up. And we need to start with bringing all our business home from China, and start producing what we need right here in the USA.

I agree, however, I think the important question what will happen when cruise lines start sailing again. Will more people on the cruise ships start getting sick or worse than ,if that  happens, I think cruise lines will have no choice but to cancel all sailings until a vaccine is available which maybe in January .

I have said all along, that if a vaccine becomes available, it may be a requirement to board. I know that a lot of people I’ve discussed this with disagree, but I could see it happen. Cruise lines cannot afford to have cancellations to the magnitude we experienced this Spring happen again.
I do hope the prices don’t go as high as you are suspecting. I, too, am retired and have a retirement budget. I put money into a vacation fund every month to allow myself to cruise. I would not be very happy if cruising was priced out of my budget.

But where does that requirement stop  the flu. MMR. pneumonia shots  . Once you have a requirement than that opens the door for other requirements.

thats exactly my  point.   someone suggested that a doctors note be acquired prior to boarding - showing that you were COVID-free...   I was saying that it would be an impossible thing, because you could be exposed AFTER you are tested and before you board your ship.

I think that if you are going to go on a cruise, you are accepting the risk.  If you go to the shows, the casino and eat in the MDR with other guests nearby, you are accepting the risk and it is ON YOU to protect yourself.  Wash up folks!!   The cruiseline will be ensuring that the silverware we get in the MDR is sanitized and bacteria free - that the plates we are being served on are clean, etc.  If you choose to eat at the buffet where you'll be butt-to-nose with other passengers, it's totally on you to take precautionary measures and you need to be prepared for any consequences.

the cruise line only has so much responsibility - at some point, it's GUESTS need to take on some accountability of their own.

Agree with everything but shouldn't that same responsibility go with opening a  business  yet the Governors of states shut down businesses and put restrictions on them to reopen. The public in general is not stupid you do not go on a cruise, or go to a restaurant, movie theater the list goes on and on but you should make that choice the government should not make it for you. You are accepting the risk  but that is your choice but for some odd reason the government thinks they know what's best for us.If the cruise lines start sailing again and people start getting or worse it will be a different ballgame.

Nothing will change.  This fades away and society evolves right back to normal.  We will find the bottom of the curve, some new great crisis will captivate the media so you won't have the 24/7 coverage, and the world moves on.  It is a risk society will accept just as we do with influenza.

We'll have to see what happens when cruise lines start sailing again, if people start getting sick with COVID-19 things will change quickly for the worst hopefully this won't happen

and what happens if you get this test, get a negative and then walk into the grocery store and infected person sneezes on you as you're walking down the bread isle?  Now you're infected but you JUST got a negative test result earlier in the day...

But you know don't that ,the same thing could happen with a person with the flu or a common cold and even norovirus you could go on and on so where do you stop. I think the bigger question is the restrictions that will be in place  when on the cruise ship will there be masks, social distancing in the dining room, the casico, how about the shows ? . I don't think that would be a very fun cruise, do you ?

You can get a test now if you are rich.  Or a politician.  Or a sports star.  Or a team of sports stars. Or maybe, just maybe,  if you are already displaying severe symptoms of the virus.  But the idea that tests are  readily available for anyone who wants one??   Not true a month ago.  Still not true a  week ago.  And probably not true for weeks or months going forward.  None of our great leaders seem to care about getting out those all important tests.  😞

I agree with you on all the above tests should be made available to anyone that wants it just like the flu vaccine is available to anyone that wants it. In the case of cruise ships you do not have to go on a cruise that is you choice however you have to follow their rules whether you like it or not  so we'll have to sit back and see how this plays out

who do you think is going to issue these tests and how would they be mandated

You could go to approved testing stations in you town and get documentation of the test to be provided at check for your cruise. This is not going to be easy all the test would show that you negative at time of testing, that is true, so would have to use your best judgement limiting contact  with other people before you check in. It is not going to be easy but you have to start somewhere.

  8. THe only concern I have is people will cruise if they are sick that is what happens when there is a norovirus outbreak  on a cruise ship guests bring it on the ship. Now with coronavirus it is different  symptoms may show up for two weeks after you're infected.

However there is a way to get around this, everybody that is going on that cruise ship gets tested say two days before the sailing date. If every one test is negative so when they board the ship there should be nobody that is infected with coronavirus. What do you think?

True nobody knows for sure, however many experts are "predicting" there will be a second wave in the fall.

So they want people to be prepared as best they can.

There is no exact science and even with a vaccine will it cover the next strain? The flu vaccine doesn't cover all, so the Covid-19 will probably be the same.

I agree,  you can get the flu even though you received  the vaccine maybe a different strain, the Covid-19 will probably be the same. I don't rely on experts  predicting anything let alone anything about this virus.  We'll have to see what happens.

Well, it gets a little gray.  The CDC cannot stop a cruise ship, with no passengers onboard, from leaving a US port and sailing to another country.  However, the USPH is tasked with prevention of introduction of infectious diseases into the US, so they can deny any ship, cruise or otherwise, from entering US waters, or require a quarantine for the ship.  The CDC is tasked with safekeeping the health of US citizens within the US, so they can deny a ship from embarking passengers if there is a perceived health risk.  And the USCG has jurisdiction over all navigable waters in the US, and the order states that operations require USCG approval, with agreement from HHS/CDC.

The key words are a perceived risk that could be anything so if a cruise ship comes back to a US port and there are no passengers  or crew that show flu like symptoms and just because it is a perceived risk that someone may be sick  the ship can be denied entry to that  US port.

We love the Vista class ships! Soo much to do, and never feel its over crowded. However, a smaller ship like the Freedom would be easier with a 2yo.

We went back to the Breeze after cruising on the Vista, and we felt like there wasnt as much to do, and we almost felt bored. So we are cruising on the Horizon this year. The ports i wanted were on a smaller ship and i lost out. But, i get to pick next year.

It depends if you think you'll ever get to the ports you want. We are only on this rock for so long, and i'd rather see a new place than a ship.

Been on the Freedom several times I think it the best ship in its class. The Horizon is a great ship, however the live entertainment should be better when it comes to bands that play dance music. The Latin club is great which are only on the Vista class ships( I think)

There is a lot more to life than cruising. I enjoy doing lots of other things besides cruising, although right now pretty much everything is shut down in the state of Florida, at least the Tampa area where we live.

You are correct there is more to life than cruising. Hopefully when things get back to somewhat normal I can go to the gym and start up with my dance lessons.

I'm thinking about rebooking for late July. The May Horizon cruise was canceled and Havana balconies are very cheap now. On the other hand, I'm still waiting on my drink package refund from a canceled March cruise. It seems pointless to give them more money and I'm still waiting for refunds!

I am  going 10/31/2020 on the Horizon.

  14. With everything that is happening people in general can't let this virus run their lives. Yes you should be careful like wash your hands often, avoid large crowds, if you're  sick stay home, the stuff you would do during the flu season. I would think the only reason the cronvirus is different there is no vaccine for it. Things will get back to normal and people will still cruise.
