The only thing I can think of that the lawyer is referring to as "industry standards" is for windows in a high-rise building... which obviously don't apply to ships.

(Remember how Eric Clapton's young son fell out of a high rise apartment window almost thirty years ago?)

What the lawyer is trying to do is compare the obviously outdoor pool deck area to a comparable indoor situation.  Anyone who has ever been on a ship will know that the open air pool deck is NOT an indoor, totally enclosed facility.

There are no railings in the Windjammer or Main Dining Room or even Oceanview Staterooms, because none of those windows open to the outside.  There are railings on all of the balconies, sun decks, observation decks, and pool decks, because all of those have ways to access the outside.

I am heartened to see that Royal has finally commented on the absurdity of the lawsuit, and that they evidently intend to fight this rather than just making it go away with a settlement.

Plain and simple, the only person responsible for this tragic event is the step-grandfather, who is either lying outright or has developed some sort of mental block regarding the events of that afternoon.

Debbie, I think this answers ur ?:

I don't deal with US construction or OSHA codes, so I'm not sure of the exact requirements either, but the ships do not have to meet any US code.  The ships must meet SOLAS requirements, which are similar to what you mention, but here is what is in the US Code (the US law that enables the SOLAS requirements):

This is the only standard that the ship needs to meet, not any other "industry standard" that the lawyer claims would apply.

we are cincy and spent alot of time at the precinct....great place with wonderful food...Loved the crowd, c collingsworth and his entourage, and back in the day seeing bankamper banging on the piano and eating the best steaks in the u.s.. My neighbor back in those days was sanchez and i know that pam worked with him...small world...my comment about wearing that stuff to ruby's places was meant in jest to those who dress like bums in the mdr on the rccl ships....I was brought up to be respectful of folks and dress nicely wherever we go, it's just  who we are...i wish you well

I always enjoyed an annual Christmas trip to The Precinct for one of the best steak dinners I’ve ever had with my two children. Pam would always be our server of course and at the end of dinner Jeff Ruby would come by our table to say hello.  He was always kind enough to provide a comped dessert to end the meal. You’re right in your assessment.  One of the best restaurants anywhere.

  3. I truly accidentally walked into the MDR on Explorer in December on the first formal night, without knowing that it was such. I was stopped at the door by a nice woman who asked if I would mind going back up to my room to change out of my nice dressy shorts and a dressy shirt. I told her I would mind, and that I didn’t see it was designated as formal night in the Cruise Compass and proceeded to my table.  I sat down and told my waiter about it, and he said he would get back with the people that stopped me because I was dressed just fine for formal night.

Now please understand I had packed two sets of formal night dress for this 10 night cruise, an expected to wear such.  I just didn’t see where it was designated as formal night in the Cruise Compass even though I knew the first at sea night is normally formal night.  It was clearly my mistake and I will hopefully not make it again.

Curious on what you mean by bigger? We found the inside room on the Freedom comparable in size to what we saw on Disney. The thing we liked about RCCL was they had small storage touches that made storing clothes, meds, toiletries, etc much easier.

My last three sailings have been on promenade view cabins on Freedom of the seas, Navigator the seas and then Explorer of the seas.  I truly love these class of cabins because you get the benefit of interior pricing but more space than a standard interior cabin.  For full disclosure, I normally sail solo.  The space created by the windows seating should not be minimized.  It just seems the whole setup is better than a true interior cabin.  I also really enjoy being on deck six or seven because I’m quickly have access to the prom and odd or down to the dining rooms.  You should investigate these class of cabins.

  5. I sailed on the Explorer in December, and I had two excursions for snorkeling that were canceled by the excursion provider.  Both excursions were booked through RCI.

The second time I reschedule the excursion, I was assured by the excursion desk that there was sufficient interest for the excursion to take place.  This was the same reason given by the original excursion provider for the cancellation.  Nonetheless, the excursion provider canceled the second snorkeling excursion. I was finally able to get on a third excursion which was not a snorkeling excursion.  This was a bus tour of the island and was very enjoyable.

Without any further action on my part, I received an envelope in my room near the end of the cruise, with a notification that I would receive a 30% future cruise credit that had to be used within 12 months.  I already have another cruise schedule so this will be of some benefit to me.  I would highly recommend you contact Miami and let them know about your negative experience.

  6. A couple of trips ago I used cash to board, then keep getting messages to come to Guest Services. The Hotel Manager told me the port check-in person screwed up. Now I use cash to book, cash to board making sure the port check-in knows what's up, then switch to a credit card with 2 days to go. I'm a night owl, Guest Services is vacant late.......

Thanks, I can't wait to try this sandwich!

The last time we sailed with RCCL was 2007. We only intend to eat for free in the MDR and Windjammer, so any other recommandation would be appreciated.

I was just on Explorer, it had a Park Cafe, but no Kimmelweck. Substitute roast beef instead.

I wonder how that happened?  I emailed RCI about a mattress topper and they said they could not accommodate me.

All I can tell you is that I emailed special needs 30 days prior to the cruise and they accommodated me on both the fridge and mattress topper. My State room attendant may have had something to do with it.  She was incredible throughout.

  10. Sailed Explorer Nov 29-Dec 8. I saw no issues with the ship. I was able to find pool area chairs. I like the R Bar for my pre-dinner drink and the service was always great. My only issues were with food quality in MDR, Excursion Desk and Guest Services. Those issues earned me a 30% FCC.

Everything the leadership told us about drydock sounded awesome, especially the "sports bar" venue. Great size ship on great cruise itineraries makes an awesome combination.

  11. I requested a medical fridge on my Explorer trip recently. This request was sent to special needs and I explained I needed it for insulin storage.

I received a TRUE refrigerator that was inserted under the desk area where the chair normally would be. It was labeled  "Medical Fridge #___". I also had the normal cooler under the desk area.

I was surprised to see this request fulfilled, which allowed several bottles of water to stay cold. My outstanding Stateroom Attendant, Reshina, also had a very comfy foam mattress topper on my bed when I arrived. A brief comment about Reshina, when my luggage hadn't arrived in my room by 7pm, she went looking for it on Deck 1 which certainly isn't her job. She was just awesome and I praised her both in my post cruise review and an email to Miami...

  12. I sailed 11/30 to 12/8. I eat in MDR only. The was food very disappointing compared to my 2018 week on the Navigator. Dinner menu boring and sometimes avg flavor. Eggs bennie blah. So much better on Nav. Rated food 5/10 being generous.

MDR service excellent. Room steward excellent. Guest services and excursions desk poor and earned me a 30% FCC.

Thinking about not even using FCC on 2020 I have booked on Western route on Allure. Have 2021 So. Route booked on Celebrity Reflection that I may use for comparison.... I would sail again on Explorer. My issues were food and some crew....
